background

Hollywood , a collaboration with Beyoncé Knowles, is the tenth track on Jay-Z's ninth album, Kingdom Come (2006). The song was written by Shawn Carter with Shaffer Smith and produced by Reggie "Syience" Perry. Musically it can be assigned to hip-hop and R&B and also contains elements of disco and dance music. The song was released for the first time on January 23, 2007 by the record company Def America for playing on the US special radio stations (for the so-called "Rhythmic Radio"), it was played on the mainstream stations from February 6, 2007.

The song deals with stardom in Hollywood with all its negative idiosyncrasies, the paparazzi , drug addiction, the self-love, the pressure to succeed and the self-denial that is common to many Hollywood stars. The song describes the problem from the perspective of the two singers and alludes to their biographies.

criticism

Hollywood received a mixed record from music critics , with Beyoncé's vocals in particular and the song's R&B elements receiving positive reviews. Spence D., editor of IGN Music, said that Knowles "shines" in Hollywood . Kelefa Sanneh of The New York Times had the same opinion, saying that Knowles was singing fabulous once again in Hollywood . Henry Adaso of About.com, however, described the collaboration between Jay-Z and Knowles in Hollywood as the worst song on the album. Louis Pattison of the New Musical Express stated that Knowles made the song impressive with her vocals. Michael Endelman of Entertainment Weekly described Hollywood said that would likely include title in a revue in Las Vegas, as a modern hip-hop album. Azeem Ahmad from musicOMH thinks the song is too poppy and cliché-laden. It's just a weak copy of Do U Wanna Ride by Kanye West featuring John Legend .
