background

Beautiful Liar was written by Mikkel Storleer Eriksen, Tor Erik Hermansen, Amanda Ghost, Ian Dench and Knowles. Eriksen thinks the song is written very simply.

“This song is very simple. Most of the time we have more chords in a song, because we find it hard writing a great song on just one chord. But if you do it right, you can make it work, and this song is an example. "

“The song is very simple. Most of the time we use multiple chords in a song because we find it difficult to write a song on just one chord. But if you do it right it can work and this song is an example of that. "

- Mikkel Storleer Eriksen : Sound on Sound

The song was written back in 2006. Eriksen and Hermansen played it to their manager, Tyran Smith, and he said the song was perfect for a duet between Shakira and Knowles. Eriksen and Hermansen found this impossible, but Smith devoted himself to the idea. Since they hadn't written any lyrics until then, different authors tried to complete the song. The first three attempts were unsatisfactory, so Smith put Eriksen and Hermansen together with Ghost and Dench, who wrote most of the lyrics and melody.

Beautiful Liar initially had a Spanish title and different text. Hermansen renamed the song when he heard the line beautiful liar in one of the choruses. When the production of the song was nearly complete, it was presented to Knowles, who approved it. She added a few lines and recorded a solo version a few months before the deluxe edition of her album B'Day was released. Knowles said in an interview with MTV News that she had met Shakira several times and that they talked about plans for a duet because they are both fans of the other and respect each other. When Knowles invited Shakira to record a song for the re-release of her second studio album, B'Day , Shakira was on tour and had difficulty finding a date. Shakira and Knowles therefore recorded their vocals in two different studios.

Musical and content

Beautiful Liar is a mid-tempo R&B song written in the key of G of the Phrygian-dominant scale in four-four time with 96 beats per minute . Knowles vocal range ranges from G 3 to B 5 . Musically, the song combines Shakira's Latin and Orient styles with Knowles hip-hop and soul styles. The lyrics of the song are about two women who do not end their friendship, even though one man cheated on one woman with the other. The main theme is female independence.

publication

Beautiful Liar was leaked on the Internet and was released as an illegal download in early February 2013. The song was released in Europe on April 14, 2007 as a download and a week later, on April 20, 2007, as a CD single. There is also a Spanish version under the name Bello Embustero and a Spanish version of Beautiful Liar that were sung without Shakira. Both versions were released on some regional versions of the Deluxe Edition of B'Day .

criticism

Nick Levine of Digital Spy gave Beautiful Liar three out of five stars and said that the song was not as ridiculously exaggerated as other duets such as Whitney Houston's and Mariah Carey's When You Believe , but still found it predictable. Ben Sisario of The New York Times magazine called Beautiful Liar a "hot track". Bill Lamb from About.com gave it 4 out of 5 stars and justified this with the statement that the song is not breathtaking, but still has its charms. He also praised the merging of the different musical styles of the two singers. Entertainment Weekly's Chris Willman criticized Beautiful Liar as “a bit of a disappointment. Shakira's voice is too similar to Beyoncé's for a really opposite tango ”.

Music video

Beautiful Liar's music video was shot by Jake Nava , who has made several other music videos with Knowles. The video was shot over two days during the two-week production of the B'Day Anthology Video Albums . Due to a busy schedule, the production team did not have enough time to design a choreography, so the dance scenes were choreographed spontaneously and the steps were rehearsed in 40 minutes. Shakira, who did most of the choreography, showed Knowles some dance moves and belly dancing . Knowles came up with the idea of playing a doppelganger in the music video. The first half of the video shows Knowles and Shakira in separate scenes. It starts with the faces of both singers who are covered in smoke. After that, the two find themselves in front of different backgrounds, including dawn (Knowles) and dusk (Shakira) and stormy weather. The two wear similar hairstyles and black outfits throughout the video.
