Loca is a song by the Colombian singer Shakira . The English version of the song with British rapper Dizzee Rascal as a duet partner was released on September 10, 2010 as the first single from their seventh studio album Sale el sol .

background

Loca was actually an interpretation of El Cata's song Loca con su tiguere . Shakira changed the melody , gave the song new beats and rewrote the lyrics . In 2014, a US federal judge ruled that the song was an illegal copy of Ramón Arias Vásquez's Loca con su tiguere . He composed it between 1996 and 1998. In 2007 it was re-recorded by El Cata.

The piece mixes influences from Latin pop with pop and hip-hop elements. With rappers as duet partners, Shakira followed a trend that Beyoncé , Jennifer Lopez and other artists had started.

About the collaboration, Dizzee Rascal said in an interview with Billboard.com:

"She's a bit of a trendsetter - she does loads of different things on a major scale. […] You'd expect her to use an American rapper [for the song], but she chose me. It meant a lot. [...] I'd like to be in that Spanish market. I got into the whole reggaeton thing when it came out, so I always wanted to get around to something like that. ”

“She's something of a trendsetter - she does an incredible amount of different things at a high level. […] You'd expect she'd take an American rapper [for the song], but she picked me. That meant a lot to me. [...] I wanted to go to the Spanish market. I 've liked the whole reggaeton stuff since it came up, so I always wanted to do something like that. "

On October 4, 2010, another version was released in Spanish with El Cata as a duo partner.

criticism

Sara D Anderson of the Aol Radio Blog characterized the song as " rock- hard merengue beats and techno percussions" and wrote that "Shakira woos her man with Loca's hypnotic chorus, the British rapper Dizzee Rascal delivers a remarkable rap interlude that shows that he was actually taken by a "crazy girl" ”.

Monica Herrara wrote in Billboard magazine that "Shakira is paying more attention to tropical music with her new single 'Loca'", the song opens with a "throbbing merengue beat" accompanied by the "seductively whispered ultimatum 'Dance or Die'".

The Sun Daily judged: "Recorded in the Dominican Republic, Shakira brings her typical different musical identities into the production of 'Loca' by mixing [...] elements of merengue with danceable techno percussions [...]."

Commercial win

In the week of October 14, 2010, Loca debuted at number 98 on the Billboard Hot 100 . The song became Shakira's ninth number one hit on the Billboard Hot Latin Songs. It also became Shakira's ninth place in the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100, reaching 32nd place on November 6, 2010, an improvement of 52 positions compared to the previous week due to the number of downloads alone .

Loca debuted at number 2 in the Swiss charts and reached number 1 a week later on October 31, 2010 . The song also became a number one hit in Italy, France, Greece and Spain.

Music video

The music video was shot in August 2010 while visiting Barcelona . As with all Shakira videos, the director was Jaume de Laiguana. On September 29, 2010, the music video was officially released worldwide. According to the New York Post , the city of Barcelona is considering fining Shakira for paralyzing city traffic for the video shoot. Shakira had danced in a public fountain without official permission and was riding a motorcycle without wearing a helmet. For Shakira, the video is about "having fun and being in this exciting place with real people".

reception

Walter Frazier from Billboard magazine describes the video: “In keeping with the theme of the song, Shakira dances in a fountain and thus attracts the attention of passers-by (she is Shakira). Unsurprisingly, some of them join in the fun and jump in the fountain too. At the end of the song Shakira dances in the open water surrounded by fans. This is Shakira - she's crazy, but that's how we like her. "

Commenting on the video, James Montgomery of MTV said, “It's a guerrilla-like endeavor to do it on a budget close to zero (everything but one performance scene appears to have been handheld). The Britneys, Beyoncés and Gagas would probably never do that ... and yet it mostly works because it looks like what Shakira would do. 'Loca' is one of the few videos that does not seek to trump the accompanying song, but rather supports it. The 'Loca' video is calculated madness, a lively, irrepressible energy that few artists can create, regardless of budget. And [...] that's exactly the way Shakira made a career. This is called synergy. "
