She Wolf ( German: Wölfin ) is the third English studio album (the eighth in total) by the Colombian Latin pop / rock singer Shakira . It was released worldwide on October 9, 2009. This album is marked by a clear departure from Latin Pop / Rock to the dance / electro style of the singer. So the album was for the production of hip-hop - producer Timbaland involved.

background

In February 2008 Shakira began work on a new album, on which Wyclef Jean and Pharrell Williams among others as producers. In March 2009 it was announced that, like in 2005, there will be two albums again. On October 9, 2009, the English-language album entitled She Wolf was released in Germany , which reached number 3 in the German album charts, but could not continue the success of the previous albums. The first single of the same name was first played on the radio in Germany on July 17th and was released as a single in early September. The video clip - realized by Jake Nava - was first shown on US TV on July 30th. The Spanish counterpart Loba was played on the radio for the first time in late June 2009.

With Give It Up To Me a new song was presented in mid-October 2009. The track produced by Timbaland - a collaboration with rapper Lil Wayne - was released on November 13th in the US as a second single; a worldwide publication is not yet planned. On November 23, She Wolf also appeared in the USA and reached number 15 here.

publication

Shakira stated on her website that "The full album will be released by Epic in October 2009 " and "contains songs in English". Shakira also stated that in 2010 she will release a Spanish version of the album called Loba . Shakira introduced "She Wolf" on July 13th, 2009 on Z100 and KIIS-FM. Shakira said in an interview that the album would contain three Spanish songs.

reception

The album was received mixed with critics. The Rolling Stone magazine criticized the completed change of style of the singer.

"Instead of continuing her successful Latin trend, Shakira really wants to try out new styles, which she didn't manage with this album"

Andy Gill of the New York Times , however, praised the style of the album.

“With this album, Shakira has shown that she has also perfected dance and electro music and that she delivers great songs. "She Wolf" is dance and electro music in tune with the times and for every taste. "

style

The album is heavily influenced by the style of dance and electro music ( She Wolf , Why Wait , Men In This Town ), but also contains Shakira's classic Latin pop / rock elements ( Mon Amour , Gypsy , Long Time ).

She herself said: “I was very curious and fascinated by the world of electropop and what it has to offer. I wanted to make sure the album got very bass heavy and focused on the beat. But my music is very complex because I always try to experiment with sounds from other parts of the world. "

She wolf

She Wolf is the first single from the album She Wolf . Unlike earlier Shakira songs, She Wolf is a dance and electro pop song. In Germany, She Wolf reached number two in the singles charts. In the USA, the single was able to climb to number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 within a few weeks due to the high number of downloads . In Great Britain the song reached number four in the single charts and in Austria and Switzerland number three in the charts.

She Wolf was certified platinum in the United States for over one million copies sold. In the United Kingdom with silver and in Spain twice with platinum.

Did it again

Did It Again ( German: Did it again ) is the second single in Europe and the fourth in the USA from the album She Wolf. Like She Wolf, the song is a dance and electro-pop song. In Europe Did It Again could not build on the success of the previous single She Wolf . In Germany the song reached number 34 in the charts, in Austria also number 34, in Switzerland number 29 and in Great Britain number 26.

Give it up to me

Give It Up to Me ( German: Leave it to me ) is the second in the USA and the third single from the album She Wolf in Europe. The song is an electro-hop song with hip-hop and dancehall elements, which is more in line with the hip-hop genre, which the hip-hoppers Timbaland and Lil Wayne, who rap in the song, try accordingly Shakira also shows her skills as a rapper in this song , so Shakira manages to mix rap and Latin pop with her singing . The song has significant similarities with Timbaland's productions Maneater , Give It to Me and Promiscous by singer Nelly Furtado , with whom Timbaland worked on her 2006 album Loose . In the US, the single reached number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 . In the USA, Give It Up to Me could not build on the success of She Wolf , but still celebrate success.

Shakira sang Give It Up to Me live at the 2009 American Music Awards .

There is no Spanish version of this song.
