La Tortura is a Latin Pop - Reggaeton song by the Colombian singer Shakira in a duet with Alejandro Sanz . The song was released on May 30, 2005 as the first single from Shakira's sixth album Fijación oral vol. 1 published. It became a huge hit worldwide and became the most famous Spanish language song by both performers. La Tortura won two Latin Grammy Awards at the 2006 awards for Song of the Year and Record of the Year . The song was number 1 in the American Latin charts for 25 weeks, this record brought Shakira an entry in the Guinness Book of World Records in 2007.

La Tortura is the most successful Spanish-language song ever in the United States, with over 1,000,000 units sold, and the best-selling and most successful Spanish-language title of the decade with over 5 million units sold worldwide.

Song information

The song is a duet by Shakira and the Spanish musician Alejandro Sanz , who wrote and produced the title together with Luis Fernando Ochoa.

It tells the story of a woman who breaks down emotionally because her boyfriend cheated on her and left her for another woman. In the course of the song, the man returns and wants to apologize to her. It remains unclear whether the two will become a couple again.

Music video

The music video for La Tortura was directed by Michael Haussman , the music video has the following content: Sanz spies on Shakira from his new girlfriend's apartment while she walks through the streets. Shakira's apartment is across from Sanz's friend's apartment. When Shakira goes to her apartment, she changes her outfits. Since then, Sanz has been remembering his relationship with Shakira. Shakira then dances in her apartment. The choreographies for the music video are by Jamie King and Shakira themselves.

The music video for La Tortura was nominated for three awards at the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards . During the gala, Shakira performed the song live with Sanz. It was the first time a song was not sung in English at the MTV Awards. Also, the La Tortura music video was the first ever Latin video in Spanish to be nominated for MTV awards.

When released as a single, the song became one of the most important Spanish-language Latin songs to make it mainstream in the English-speaking world in North America. La Tortura reached number 23 on the US Billboard Hot 100 twenty weeks after its release and number 60 on the US 2005 annual charts. The song also went platinum for 1,000,000 sales in the United States, making it the first Latin title that achieved this feat.

In Spain the song made its debut at number 1, was successful across Europe and reached the top ten in almost every country. In Switzerland, the song spent 15 weeks in the top 5, but did not reach number 1. La Tortura was not released as a single in the UK , but it was ranked 34th in the UK charts thanks to the success of Shakiras Illegal . The song also broke the record for most weeks (25) at number 1 on the American Latin charts, thereby making the song a 2007 edition of Guinness World Records .
