Emergence

After the release of her first live album MTV Unplugged: Shakira , with which she won her first Grammy Award , Shakira had the desire to become known in the United States and the rest of the world through English-language songs . With the help of a private tutor she learned English , she also went to a farm in Uruguay for two years to learn how to write and record in English. After studying the lyrics of Bob Dylan and the poetry of Walt Whitman , Shakira began to write her own English-language songs "with a dictionary in one hand and a thesaurus in the other." While working on her studio album Laundry Service , Shakira wrote the lyrics to Underneath Your Clothes as a love song for her boyfriend at the time. The singer's second live album, Live & Off the Record , includes an acoustic version of the song, which Shakira recorded in April 2003 during a performance in Rotterdam as part of her Tour of the Mongoose .

Chuck Taylor of Billboard magazine described the song as "a thought-provoking ballad that finds a novel way to convey a message of love and devotion." Her boyfriend at the time Antonio de la Rúa, the son of the former Argentine President Fernando de la Rúa, plays in the music video .
