Maneater is the first European Single of the Portuguese - Canadian pop - singer Nelly Furtado from her third studio album Loose , with whom she reported back after a year's break. The song was written by Furtado, Timbaland , Nate Hills and Jim Beanz and produced at Hit Factory in Miami , Florida . With Maneater she began to discover hip-hop for herself, which was probably also due to Timbaland, who produced the song and the album.

Maneater was the first single on the album and the European region was selected for the release. In the German-speaking area the CD was released on May 26, 2006, in the rest of Europe and Asia around a week later. In North America and Australia , however , Maneater did not hit stores until September 26, 2006 as the second single from Loose .

Production history

Maneater was one of the first songs Furtado and Timbaland worked on together at the Hit Factory Criteria Recording Studios in Miami , Florida . She described the song as an analogy of how she worked with the "creative energy" Timbalands and his team in Loose . While producing the album, Furtado and Timbaland were drawn from the work of musicians from the 1980s such as: B. Talking Heads , Blondie , Madonna , The Police and Eurythmics . Final production of the track was delayed after a fire broke out in the studio's control room. Furtado stated that Maneater was "a" couture pop "song". In an interview with MTV News, she described the song as follows: “It has a crazy, loud beat and the voices are snappy and loud. Lots of people say Maneater sounds like a Peaches song because of the creepy voices ”. The song is about an insecure relationship with a so-called "maneater", a charismatic and seductive woman who uses her charm to control and destroy the lives of men. According to Furtado, the song is related to people "feeling hot when they dance in front of the mirror in their underwear". “It just includes life itself; it makes you dance, ”she said during the media-initiated comparison with the Hall & Oates single" Maneater ", which Furtado named as inspiration for the song.

On January 8, 2006, a 30-second clip of the piece was released on the Internet and the full title on the 17th. This version has a different ending than the one on the album Loose . The rapper Lil Wayne , who Furtado referred to as "the most amazing freestyler in the world", is featured on a remix by Maneater . The music duo JoSH , who already produced a remix of the song Powerless (Say What You Want) , also developed another remix for Maneater . The Australian single also includes a cover of Gnarls Barkley's Crazy .

The song was nominated for Best International for the NRJ Music Awards .

Video

Anthony Mandler directed the video for Maneater . It was filmed primarily on Firestone Boulevard in South Gate , California over a period of over fourteen hours. The choreography was taken over by Frank Gatson, who u. a. worked with Beyoncé and Rihanna .

The video focuses on Furtado's request on the one hand on partying and on the other hand on the parody of a "man-murdering woman". It begins with Furtado looking for her runaway Great Dane Toby at night in an apparently deserted industrial area of a nameless city. She follows her dog to the basement of a dilapidated building, where she encounters a silent crowd. Furtado stands in the middle of the crowd and starts dancing at the beginning of the song. This serves the purpose of the catalyst of a dance party. In the video, Furtado is shown dancing an oriental dance , as well as other shots in which she stands in front of flames. Towards the end of the video, Furtado goes to the roof of the building and dances with the sun rising. At the end of the video, Furtado leaves the party at dawn and finds her dog waiting on a stair step near the exit.

The "Maneater" world premiere was on May 4, 2006 on MTV Germany on Total Request Live , better known as TRL, where it entered the TRL charts at number 9 the next day. In the United States, Yahoo! Music premiered on September 6th.
