Whoa, Nelly! is the debut album of the Portuguese - Canadian singer Nelly Furtado . It was released on October 24, 2000.

History of origin

Nelly Furtado is the sole author of most of the titles, the other numbers she wrote the lyrics together with Gerald Eaton and Brian West. Some of the songs had been written in previous sessions with Track & Field even before Furtado had her record deal with DreamWorks .

Different musical styles ( pop music , hip-hop , contemporary R&B ) are mixed on the album . Slant magazine called Whoa, Nelly! as "a refreshing and invigorating antidote to the mass of pop princesses and rap-metal bands who had gained power over pop music at the beginning of the millennium."

The “Whoa” in the title corresponds in German to “ Brr ”, an order directed to draft animals or mounts to stop. The saying "Whoa, Nelly!" Is attributed to sports commentator Keith Jackson . Even Roy Rogers used the saying in several films in which he rides a stubborn ass.

meaning

In the first few months after its release, the album went largely unnoticed, but as Furtado's popularity grew (not least due to the two hits I'm Like a Bird and Turn Off the Light ), sales also rose significantly. In the spring of 2001, Furtado headlined the Burn In The Spotlight tour, which brought the album additional attention. Whoa, Nelly! Has achieved gold and platinum status in numerous countries and has sold over 6.5 million times worldwide.

The album received four nominations for the 2002 Grammy Awards. Furtado's debut single, I'm Like a Bird , won a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance .
