The students and childhood friends Darlene and Alice go on a vacation trip to Bangkok .
Here they get to know the Australian software specialist Nick, who helps them out of an awkward position. Together they plan to travel on to Hong Kong . Nick says he's flying ahead and gives the two tickets for the next day's flight. When Darlene and Alice arrive a little late at the airport, they are caught in a raid by the airport police. They find packets of heroin in the luggage of the two girls .
The girls are initially in custody and will later be tried. The verdict: 33 years in prison.
Together with their defense attorney "Yankee" Hank Greene, they reopen the case.
In the meantime, they must try to survive in a ruthless prison, Brokedown Palace . The pair attempt to escape and the sentence is extended by 15 years.
When a deal that Hank wants to negotiate for his innocent clients bursts, Alice sees only one way out to at least save Darlene: she takes all the guilt and agrees to serve not only her sentence but also Darlene. Darlene is then pardoned, and Alice is left alone at Brokedown Palace , knowing that Darlene and Hank will do everything to get her free.

James Berardinelli praised the portrayals of Kate Beckinsale and Claire Danes on "ReelViews", but he described the film as "clichéd" and its dialogues as "unconvincing".
The German Film and Media Evaluation FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the title valuable.
