The students and childhood friends Darlene and Alice go on a vacation trip to Bangkok .

Here they get to know the Australian software specialist Nick, who helps them out of an awkward position. Together they plan to travel on to Hong Kong . Nick says he's flying ahead and gives the two tickets for the next day's flight. When Darlene and Alice arrive a little late at the airport, they are caught in a raid by the airport police. They find packets of heroin in the luggage of the two girls .

The girls are initially in custody and will later be tried. The verdict: 33 years in prison.

Together with their defense attorney "Yankee" Hank Greene, they reopen the case.

In the meantime, they must try to survive in a ruthless prison, Brokedown Palace . The pair attempt to escape and the sentence is extended by 15 years.

When a deal that Hank wants to negotiate for his innocent clients bursts, Alice sees only one way out to at least save Darlene: she takes all the guilt and agrees to serve not only her sentence but also Darlene. Darlene is then pardoned, and Alice is left alone at Brokedown Palace , knowing that Darlene and Hank will do everything to get her free.
