South Gate is a city in Los Angeles County in the US state of California with 103,547 inhabitants (as of 2005 ). The urban area has a size of 19.4 km² and is located approximately 11 kilometers south of downtown Los Angeles and east of Inglewood .
The name South Gate refers to the "south gate" of the ranch of Don Antonio Maria Lugo (1783-1860), where the city was founded.
