Sweet Dreams ( dt , Sweet Dreams'.) Is a song of the US R & B - singer Beyoncé . The song was produced by Knowles, James Scheffer, Wayne Wilkins and Rico Love for their third studio album, I Am… Sasha Fierce . Sweet Dreams was released on June 2, 2009 as the sixth single from the album I Am… Sasha Fierce in the USA. In Germany, the song was released on July 13, 2009 as a download and on July 31, 2009 as a single CD , where it was the third CD release of the album after If I Were a Boy and Halo .

Sweet Dreams is a pop song with electronic influences. This is mainly reflected in the use of synthesizers, a keyboard and snare drums . This electronic music style is in contrast to Knowle's otherwise typical R&B songs . The song reached number ten on the Billboard Hot 100 , number one in New Zealand and top five rankings in Australia , Ireland , Slovakia , the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom . In Germany, Sweet Dreams achieved eighth place in the German single charts as the best placement . The song was also nominated for the Viewer's Choice Award at the BET Awards 2010.

background

Originally called Beautiful Nightmare , it was one of the first songs composed for Knowles' album I Am ... Sasha Fierce . Knowles, who actually wanted to attend her husband Jay-Z's opening concert in Miami, was not prepared for a recording. When she heard the song, however, she was delighted and recorded it within an hour. Sweet Dreams is on the Sasha Fierce CD of her double album I Am… Sasha Fierce , on which Knowles portrays her alter ego Sasha Fierce, who she describes as her "more sensual, aggressive, outspoken and glamorous side".

Sweet Dreams leaked under the original name of Beautiful Nightmare the day after it was recorded and 8 months before the album was released . It was the first time a Knowles song was leaked before it was identified as a song on a future album. She responded to the leak on her official website and thanked her fans for the positive feedback on the song before clarifying that the recording is unfinished, the song is still work in progress and she has no intention of doing any more in the near future Publish material.

Musical and content

Sweet Dreams is an electro pop song with rock, R&B and funk music influences. It is written in E minor, is four-four time and has a tempo of 130 beats per minute . The song is essentially driven by a keyboard and also includes the use of guitars, piano, synthesizer, snare drums and bass.

The lyrics of Sweet Dreams are about a female protagonist who has some insecurities about her new romantic relationship. She is confused whether her relationship with her partner, a "sweet dream" (English sweetdream ) or a "beautiful nightmare" (English beautiful nightmare is). The song begins with a bass line that is interrupted by drum beats, drum fills and Knowles' exclamation "Turn the lights on". The first stanza follows. The chorus begins with the line “You can be a sweet dream or a beautiful nightmare / Either way, I don't wanna wake up from you”. Knowle's voice shifts from low registers during the verses to high registers during the chorus, her singing ranges from the low D 4 to the high F 5 .

publication

Originally it was planned to release the song Broken-Hearted Girl in addition to the single Ego , which was only released in the United States . Shortly before the release, however, the decision was made to release Sweet Dreams instead of Broken-Hearted Girl , as Knowles wanted an up-tempo song that made people dance as a summer release. Sweet Dreams was released on June 2, 2009 in the United States as the sixth single from the album I Am… Sasha Fierce, alongside the recently released single Ego . In Germany, after the single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) , which was only available as a download, If I Were a Boy and Halo, the song was the fourth single and third CD release of the album.

criticism

Sweet Dreams was well received by the critics, with particular praise for its electro-pop sound, which stands out from Knowle's earlier work. MTV's James Montgomery also praised Knowle's vocals and the unusual, adventurous sound of Sweet Dreams . Joey Guerra of The Houston Chronicle and Gary Trust of Billboard Magazine agreed that the song was Knowles' purest dance song and "an irresistible invitation to dance."

Pitchfork Media's Ryan Dombal wrote that Sweet Dreams sounds like a Rihanna song. Based on this statement, Nick Levine of Digital Spy wrote that "the best song on the Sasha Fierce CD is a dark electro-pop song called Sweet Dreams, which actually sounds like the cousin of Rihanna's Disturbia". In a single review, Levine awarded four out of five stars. IGN Entertainment's Spence D. noted that while Sweet Dreams is n't a standout song, it is better than other songs on the album, including Diva and Radio . Vicki Lutas of BBC Music made a similar statement . She wrote that while Sweet Dreams is missing something, it is undoubtedly a good song overall. She added that Sweet Dreams Knowles was the best song since Crazy in Love . Lutas Knowles also described vocals as "beautiful and soft, yet strong and powerful".
