The Boston Globes Sarah Rodman describes the song as "Hip-Hop-Beyoncé", who "goes more and more in the hip-hop direction, but does not forget about R&B, for which her friend and colleague Jay-Z is probably also responsible. who also taught her to rap. " Blender's Jonah Weiner wrote that "'Ring the Alarm' doesn't fit Beyoncé". Chris Richards of The Washington Post describes the song "as unsuccessful attempts at rap. Beyoncé makes harder and harder songs instead of the erotic and romantic songs she can sing best."

Andy Kellman of Allmusic describes the song as " old school hip-hop of the early 90s". Norman Mayers of Prefixmag said, "The song shows Ms. Knowles' rock side."

Beyoncé sang the song live at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards .
