Suga Mama is a song by the American R&B singer Beyoncé Knowles from her second music album B'Day (2006). The song was written by Knowles with Rich Harrison and Makeba Riddick and produced by Harrison and Knowles. Suga Mama contains influences from the funk music of the 60s and 70s and contains elements from the go-go of the 80s. Musically, the song ranges from R&B to soul and hip-hop . The song samples Jake Wade and the Soul Searchers song Searching for Soul , which was written by Chuck Middleton. In terms of content, Suga Mama treats the female protagonist who allows her lover to spend their money so that their love for each other remains and they can live together.

Music critics praised Suga Mama and named it one of the best songs on the album, and Harrison's work on the production of the song was also praised. However, some criticized Knowles for always trying to achieve her best vocal performance. Although Suga Mama was not released as a single, Knowles turned with Melina Matsoukas a black and white - music video to Suga Mama which on Knowles Video Album B'Day Anthology Video Album was released (2007). The music video was only aired on British music networks for a short period of time. Knowles also sang the song on her last two world tours, the "The Beyoncé Experience" tour (2007) and on the " I Am ... World Tour " (2010) and the live albums.

background

Knowles hired Rich Harrison as one of B'Day's producers, and she assigned him to Sean Garrett and Rodney Jerkins , who had separate rooms at Sony Music Studios in New York City . Knowles said it encouraged "freedom" for producers, so Knowles gave each producer a single space in the music studio for themselves to produce "good" work. She and Harrison worked together on Knowle's number one hit, Crazy in Love, from 2003, which also has soul influences like Suga Mama .

Musical and content

Suga Mama is an R&B song. According to Shaheem Reid from MTV News and Joseph Mike from the online magazine PopMatters, the song contains influences from funk music of the 60s and 70s, from soul and rock music . In addition, the song contains elements from the go-go 80s, and Knowles sings and raps the title, accompanied by a jazzy hip-hop - Beat . Brian Hiatt of Rolling Stone magazine wrote that the song contains a "blues guitar" sample. The song also includes a sample of Jake Wade and the Soul Searcher's song Searching for Soul , which was written by Chuck Middleton.

In terms of content, the song deals with the female protagonist, who offers her lover her credit card so that he can stay with her and they can live together and passionately listen to her old collections of soull songs only in pairs. This interpretation of the content becomes clear in these lines of text of the song: “It's so good to the point that I'll do anything just to keep you home [...] Tell me what you want me to buy, my accountant's waiting on the phone [...] ". The protagonist also sees the man as an object of her sexual desire and asks him if he can sit on her lap so that she can feel the sexual closeness. The USA Today compared the content of the song with the Destiny's Childs number one hit Bills, Bills, Bills of 1999 and wrote: "someone is only needed Knowles, who pays their bills, now they are those in Suga Mama their credit card so that he can help himself freely and thus keep the relationship. ”Dave de Sylvi of Sputnikmusic said that Knowles sings:“ I could be like a jolly rancher that you get from the corner store, ”with the same nonsense as Christina Aguilera in Candyman (2007). Gail Mitchell of Billboard Magazine compared the content of the song with that of Tina Turner's works. The American rapper Consequence is involved in a remix version of Suga Mama .

criticism

The Chicago Sun-Times wrote that Suga Mama represented the "best moment" of B'Day . The The Washington Post said the Rich Harrison "with" Suga Mama "again delivers a taste of the finest, with a soulful soundtrack that brings Beyoncé singing to excellence." Dave de Sylvi of Sputnik Music said that Knowles Suga Mama a "sweet Bonbon “, which could clearly keep up with the soul icons of the 60s. Allmusic's Andy Kellman described Suga Mama as a "great overlay" track. Jody Rosen of Entertainment Weekly said songs like Suga Mama Knowles show “virtuosity” and added, “Nobody - not R. Kelly , nor Usher , apart from her female pop rivals - can sing like Beyoncé, she is unique; these songs prove that she stands all alone on the top [...] ”.

Music video

The music video for Suga Mama premiered on a UK music network in April 2007. The music video was shot in black and white , and Melina and Knowles directed it. The music video appeared on Knowles' video album B'Day Anthology Video Album , which was also released in April 2007. The music video for Suga Mama was one of eight music videos that Knowles and Melina recorded for their video album within two weeks. At the beginning of the music video, Knowles is sitting in a chair, wearing men's clothes and smoking a cigarette. Then she gets up and starts dancing on a strip pole. Knowles shows suggestive and erotic dance moves, as in most of her music videos. In the further course of the music video, Knowles dances on a large sugar cube and then with dancers. At the end of the music video, Knowles is dancing on a mechanical bull. Knowles said of the music video, “I'm slowly becoming a woman in the music video. Well, to a more sexual woman - I'm always a woman. "

Knowles rehearsed dancing on the bar with two ballet sticks. Although Knowles is from Texas , she has never been on a mechanical bull before. There were no problems during rehearsals, but the bull was later programmed to move faster than intended, causing Knowles to fall when she tried to dance on the bull. The scene with the bull was shot more often due to the difficulties.

Live performances

Knowles did not sing the song in any television appearance. The song was on the set list of their second tour, the tour "The Beyoncé Experience". During her I Am ... tour in 2009, Knowles sang the song at Odyssey Arena in Northern Ireland , O 2 Arena in London , Athens and Sydney . In Los Angeles Knowles only sang segments of the song, she wore a golden translucent dress with a golden bow on her bum during her performance and sang without the accompaniment of dancers or her tour band. Just before the song began, a few dancers got in the mood for Knowles' performance. When Knowles sang the song in Sunrise , Florida on June 29, 2009, she was wearing a gold glittering catsuit . This time she sang the song with her dancers and her tour band. Knowles was accompanied by two drummers , two keyboardists , a percussionist and three background singers as well as the guitarist Bibi McGill. Suga Mama also appeared on her live album The Beyoncé Experience Live (2007). The The Tennessean wrote that the song at the gig was "sexual" than on the album.
