Spanglish

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Spanglish is a hybrid of the English and Spanish languages spoken by the Spanish-speaking population of the United States ( Hispanics ) . This variety is mainly found in regions where both Spanish and English are spoken, such as the border area between Mexico and the USA, Florida , New York City or Los Angeles . In Spanish, the mixed language is mostly called Espanglish , more rarely Espanglis . In the Portuguese- speaking area, Portuñol describes the corresponding mixture of Portuguese and Spanish.

Examples of such "Spanglish" expressions are:

  • llamar para atrás from english call back instead of devolver la llamada
  • te veo from English see you (soon) as ( see you soon ) instead of hasta pronto or hasta luego
  • no hace sentido of English it does not make sense ( it does not make sense ) rather than no tiene sentido
  • me voy a la marqueta from English I am going to the market ( I am going to the market ) instead of me voy al mercado
  • quiero un jamburguer from English I would like to have a hamburger ( I want a hamburger ) instead of quiero una hamburguesa
  • drinquear from English to drink ( drink ) instead beber
  • priti from English pretty ( pretty, nice ) instead of guapa
