Giannina Braschi (born February 5, 1953 in San Juan ) is a Puerto Rican writer and scientist .

Life

Giannina Braschi came to New York City in 1977 and graduated from the State University of New York with a Ph.D. in Spanish literature. She then taught literature at Rutgers University , Queens College and Colgate University . She is considered a leading woman in the Nuyorican movement (a New York and Puerto Rican cultural movement ).

Literary development

Braschi's early works were based on the main poets of the Golden Century and the avant-garde authors of Latin America . She wrote a work on the romantic Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer and essays on Cervantes , Vallejo and Garcia Lorca . Then she came into contact with the dramatic and philosophical books of French, German, Irish, Polish and Russian authors and was impressed by them. Although her books are classified as novels, her later works are experiments in both style and format and show many foreign influences.

Friederike C. Raderer said in a report on Puerto Rico on the Austrian ORF: With her novel "Yo-Yo Boing!" the mish-mash of languages that is common among Hispanics in New York is a monument to the " Spanglish ".
