Ilan Stavans

Ilan Stavans (born 7. April 1961 in Mexico City as Ilan Stavchansky Slomianski ) is a Mexican-American essayist, cultural critic, journalist, dictionary compiler, translator and educator.

life and work

Ilan Stavans was born in 1961 to an Eastern European Jewish family in Mexico City, Mexico , and grew up in a multi-lingual family environment. His father is the popular actor Abraham Stavans, who appeared in the Mexican television series El Chavo del Ocho . Ilan Stavans lived in Europe , Latin America and the Middle East . In 1985 he emigrated to the United States . He lives in the state of Massachusetts .

He initially received his academic training at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico , the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana , he received a master's degree from the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City and received his doctorate in 1990 from Columbia University . He has been teaching at Amherst College since 1993 , where he is Lewis-Sebring Professor in Latin American and Latino Culture . It also teaches at Columbia University and several other universities.

As a sociolinguist, he is considered the authority on Spanglish research and is known for his language and cultural research on American, Spanish and Jewish cultures. His passion for lexicography is expressed in his autobiographical work Dictionary Days: A Defining Passion (2005).

From 2001 to 2006 he directed the national television series Conversations with Ilan Stavans for the PBS . In 1997 Stavans received a Guggenheim grant and has received several international prizes and awards including the Medalla Presidencial de Chile , the Premio Rubén Darío and the Latino Literature Prize .

He is the author of numerous publications and has also worked as an editor, for example for two volumes of the Mexican classic book series Sepan cuantos or the Schocken Book of Modern Sephardic Literature , the Norton anthology of Latino literature , the Oxford Book of Jewish Stories or the Encyclopedia Latina .
