The Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana ( UAM ) is a public university in Mexico , founded in 1974 by the then President Luis Echeverría Álvarez .

history

The house on Calle Primo Verdad No.10, where Antonio de Mendoza opened America's first printing works in 1536, is now part of UAM.

In 1973 an application was made to the Mexican government ANUIES to be able to build new universities, as the number of students in the metropolitan area of Mexico City was expected to rise . The regulation establishing the new university came into force on January 1, 1974 .

The university was founded decentrally at the Azcapotzalco , Iztapalapa and Xochimilco locations . Another unit was later opened in Cuajimalpa .

The symbol of the university is a black panther, which is also used by the soccer team in the Mexican league.

structure

The Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana is divided into four units that are located on the periphery of Mexico City :

  • The Azcapotzalco unit opened on November 11, 1974. The color of the Azcapotzalco unit is red.
  • The color of the unit Cuajimalpa is orange.
  • The Iztapalapa Unit opened on September 30, 1974. The color of the Iztapalapa unit is green. The largest mural by the Canadian-Mexican artist Arnold Belkin has been located here since 1983 .
  • The color of the Xochimilco unit is blue.
  • The youngest unit, Lerma , was introduced in 2009. It is located in Toluca de Lerdo .
