Iztapalapa is one of 16 districts ( delegaciones ) of Mexico City and is located in the central east of the Mexican capital. The district borders the Delegación Iztacalco to the north, Benito Juárez , Coyoacán and Xochimilco to the west (from north to south), Tláhuac to the south and the state of México to the east .

history

The district was created in 1928 when Mexico City was first divided into Delegaciones . Its name was taken from the community of the same name, which was already settled by the Aztecs and in the Nahuatl language means as much as Im Uferwasser ; an allusion to its former location on the southern edge of Lake Texcoco , which occasionally resulted in partial flooding.

In the pre-Hispanic times the place served as a producer and supplier of agricultural products for Tenochtitlan , later it connected the capital with the gardens of Xochimilco via the Canal de la Viga .

Since September 2019, Iztapalapa has been the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of the same name .

Problems

One of the main attractions of the district at the foot of the Cerro de la Estrella is a visit to the national park of the same name, which fell into disrepute at the beginning of 2013 due to the discovery of four bodies. The four people had been bitten to death by a horde of feral dogs that appeared to live in caves and crevices. After the incident, Mexico's police chief Jesús Rodríguez Almeida advised the population not to visit the Cerro de la Estrella until further notice.

But the feral dogs aren't the only problem Iztapalapa has to contend with. The district is considered to be particularly criminal. Not only is there a constant trafficking of drugs and stolen auto parts, but Iztapalapa also has the highest rate of rape and murder in Mexico City. There were 470 murders between 2008 and 2010, representing around 20% of all murders committed in the Mexican capital.

Water supplies are inadequate in some areas of the district.
