Azcapotzalco ( Nahuatl for "anthill" ; [ aːskapoˈtsaɬko ] ) is one of 16 administrative districts of the Federal District , the capital district of Mexico .
Azcapotzalco is located in northwest Mexico City . Until it was incorporated into the city due to the progressive expansion of the urban area, the place was an independent municipality.
history
Pre-Hispanic time
Presumably there was already a settlement in Azcapotzalco at the height of Teotihuacán at the beginning of the 1st century of the Christian era. At that time the settlement was located on the northeastern shore of Lake Texcoco. The place has since been abandoned and re-established in the 12th century. As a result, Azcapotzalco became the capital of the Tepaneca people . Under the rulers Tezozómoc and Maxtla , referred to as tyrants, Azcapotzalco was the supreme power of the high valley of Mexico, the Aztecs and numerous other peoples of the region had to pay tribute. After the conquest of the city by Aztec ruler Itzcóatl in 1428, Azcapotzalco lost its political importance.
Colonial times
In 1519 , when Hernán Cortés first came to the Aztec metropolis, Moctezuma II presented himself in magnificent robes that had been made in Azcapotzalco.
After the Conquista, the region was subordinated to the new Spanish landowners Delgadillo and Maldonado. The Dominicans built a parish church and a monastery. The Chapel of the Virgin of Rosario, which was completed at the beginning of the 18th century, is known beyond the city limits. It is considered to be an important architectural testimony to the colonial era.
The Porfirian period
Between 1876 and 1910 , the character of Mexico City was heavily influenced by President Porfirio Díaz . During this period, elegant French-style houses were built on Azcapozalco's main street.
today
Azcapotzalco has changed dramatically in the 20th century. The expansion of Mexico City has resulted in many suburbs being incorporated. The state oil production company PEMEX has meanwhile built a refinery there, which has now been closed and a park is to be built on the site. Azcapotzalco gained a reputation as a suburb of the middle class.
Azcapotzalco is now experiencing a new economic upswing. The TecnoParque Azcapotzalco was born , the first of its kind in Mexico City, to meet the needs of offices for national and multinational companies and institutions.
Azcapotzalco has been the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of the same name since September 2019 .
