Tezozómoc

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Tezozómoc († 1426 ) was a prince of the Tepanecs who ruled the city-state of Azcapotzalco from 1371 to 1426 . He resolutely expanded the supremacy of the Tepaneks and made Azcapotzalco the leading political force in the Valley of Mexico .

During his reign, the Aztec Tenochtitlán was a vassal of the Tepanecs and had to wage and conquer war with other cities for them. Many of his sons became rulers of cities conquered by the Aztecs in the Valley of Mexico . The climax of these clashes was the battle with the city of Acolhuacán , which at the time was the second most powerful city in the region. The war that began in 1414 dragged on for several years and could only be won with massive help from Tenochtitlán and Tlatelolco . As a reward, one of Tezozómoc's daughters was married to the Aztec ruler Huitzilíhuitl . From this connection Chimalpopoca emerged, who was to succeed his father on the throne as a child.

After Tezozómoc's death in 1426, his son Maxtla succeeded him.
