Maxtla
Maxtla († 1428 ) was ruler of the city-state of Azcapotzalco, which belonged to the Tepanec Empire, until his death . He succeeded his father Tezozómoc to the throne, presumably after murdering his older brother Tayauh .
Under his rule, the former great power Azcapotzalco experienced a dramatic decline. The previously friendly relations with the Méxica of Tenochtitlán were replaced by a phase of political tension that culminated in the assassination of the head of the Méxica and Tezozómoc's grandson, Chimalpopoca , in 1426.
During the siege of Tenochtitlán, Itzcóatl , Chimalpopoca's successor, supported by allied city-states (including Texcoco and Tlacopán ) was able to successfully throw Maxtla back. Azapotzalco was sacked and Maxtla was killed with his own hand by Nezahualcóyotl , the ruler of Texcoco, in a sacrificial ceremony. The victorious powers gave their union an official form and formed the Aztec Triple Alliance . In doing so, they laid the foundation for the later Aztec empire .
