The deep-sea cardinalfish (Epigonidae) belong to the perch relatives (Percomorphaceae). They live in the Mediterranean , Atlantic , Pacific and Indian Oceans .

features

Depending on the species, the fish are 3 to 75 centimeters long. Deep-sea cardinalfish differ from the (not closely related) cardinalfish (Apogonidae) by the number of vertebrae and other features in their bone structure. They usually have 25 vertebrae. Their dorsal and anal fins are covered with scales.

Systematics

There are about 45 species , of which over 35 belong to the genus Epigonus . The remaining 6 genera contain only one or two species each.
