The Neoteleostei or modern bony fish are a group of real bony fish , more precisely one of the four sub-cohorts of the Euteleosteomorpha . The Neoteleostei belong to the large group of bony fish ( Acanthomorpha ) with fin sting, three orders consisting mainly of deep-sea fish species.

features

The most important autapomorphies of the Neoteleostei are the three-part articulation of the occiput with the first vertebra; a special muscle ( retractor dorsalis muscle ) that extends from the upper pharyngeal jaws to the spine and is important for devouring food; and a dental fixture in which only the back of the tooth is attached to the tooth base with connective tissue, but the front is not. This opens up the possibility of folding the tooth backwards, as is the case with some deep-sea fish belonging to the Neoteleostei. The third levator muscle (arcus branchialis) internus inserts on the fifth tooth plate of the dorsal pharynx, the transversus dorsalis anterior muscle attaches to the epibranchial of the second branchial arch.

Systematics

Since the above-described tooth attachment can also be found for the pike-like (Esociformes), many scientists consider this to be the sister group of the Neoteleostei. In this case, they would not form the sub-cohort Protacanthopterygii together with salmon-like , golden salmon-like and galaxies .

The following cladogram shows the systematic position of the Neoteleostei:

  Euteleosteomorpha

 Lepidogalaxii (salamander fish)

 Protacanthopterygii ( galaxies , golden salmon- like , salmon- like , pike-like )

 Stomiati ( smelt-like , Maulstachler )

  Neoteleostei

 Deep- sea tadpoles (Ateleopodiformes)

  Eurypterygii

 Lizardfish relatives (Aulopiformes)

  Ctenosquamata

 Lanternfish (Myctophiformes)

 Acanthomorpha (finned bony fish)
