The Stomiati (= Stomiatii) are a monophyletic taxon of the real bony fish (Teleostei), namely one of the four sub-cohorts of the Euteleosteomorpha .

Systematics

The stomiati comprise two orders, the sister group relationship of which has only been recognized in recent years:

Traditionally, the stomiiformes, an order of mostly small and often bizarre-looking deep-sea fishing, to the Neoteleostei forming inclusive of the now independent orders - been made, whereas the smelt-like galaxies (Galaxiiformes), silver smelt-like (Argentiniformes) and Lepidogalaxias salamandroides (Lepidogalaxiiformes in monotypic sub-cohort Lepidogalaxii) - belonged to the Protacanthopterygii .

While the mentioned groups were separated from the smelt-like (today's Argentiniformes some time before the other two), but remained with the Protacanthopterygii with the exception of Lepidogalaxias , the smelt-like, reduced to four families, with the mouth-spiked as a sister group in the newly created clade Stomiatii relocated; the Protacanthopterygii were initially suspected as their sister group. With the third version of the revision of the bony fish systematics after phylogenetic investigations by R. Betancur-R. et al. (2014) there was no double “i” at the end of the spelling; however, this was not explicitly discussed. According to the fourth version (2016) of the same study, there is likely a sister group relationship with the Neoteleostei.

The presumed relationships are shown in the following cladogram :

  Euteleosteomorpha

 Lepidogalaxii

  Protacanthopterygii

 Golden salmon (Argentiniformes)

 Galaxies (Galaxiiformes)

 Pike-like (Esociformes)

 Salmonid fish  (Salmoniformes)

  Stomiati

 Smelt-like (Osmeriformes)

 Maulstachler (Stomiiformes)

 Neoteleostei
