The Ctenosquamata (= comb scaly) are a high taxon (a systematic group) of the real bony fish , to which the lantern fish-like (Myctophiformes) and the Acanthomorpha (the spiked bony fish) belong. The taxon was established in 1973 by the American ichthyologist Donn Rosen . Rosen indicated the absence of the fifth upper pharyngeal tooth plate as the only synapomorphism . Later, the ichthyologist Melanie Stiassny added four more synapomorphies, including the absence of supraorbital bones (bones around the eye socket), the merging of the neural arches of the first vertebrae and two posterior (ceratohyale) Branchiostegal rays . The monophyly of the Ctenosquamata is also confirmed by molecular genetic studies. The Ctenosquamata include over 16,000 species of fish.
