Artpop (stylized: ARTPOP , in German roughly: Art Pop ) is the third studio album by the American artist Lady Gaga . It was released worldwide in November 2013. On November 11th, 2019 there was a new edition of Artpop, this time without the song Do What You Want.

background

The first concepts for art pop emerged shortly after Lady Gaga's second studio album Born This Way (2011) was released, when she was working with producers Paul Blair and Fernando Garibay. Blair described the situation as follows: "It couldn't have been more than a week [...] and she hit me up and said," OK, the next album's called Artpop , let's go. "[Maybe it wasn't once a week later ... she called me and said, "Okay, the next album is called Artpop , let's get started."] Lady Gaga recorded around fifty songs that were intended for inclusion in the album. In May 2012, her manager announced that the production of the album, which consists of "insane, great records", had been completed.

Basic topic

Gaga described Artpop as a festival and a poetic-musical journey. It should represent immaturity and a lack of sense of responsibility, in contrast to the rather abstract and content-laden keynote of the previous album. In the official announcement of the album, she announced that she was aiming for a "reverse Warholian expedition" with Artpop , thus surviving her 15 minutes of fame .

In terms of lyrics, the album deals with a variety of topics. The opener “Aura”, which was originally to be called “Burqa”, sparked controversy because of its allusions to Arab and Islamic culture as a metaphor for Gaga's self-determination as an artist and woman. "Venus", "GUY" and "Sexxx Dreams" deal with the topics of desire and sexuality. In “MANiCURE” she sings about a woman who longs for a “man cure”, that is, who wishes to get away from her infatuation. "ARTPOP" is Gaga's declaration of love for the fusion of art and pop culture and her fan base, which she loves unconditionally. “Do What U Want” addresses today's media focus on artists. In particular, it is pointed out that Lady Gaga's body is less important than her thoughts, her soul ( You can't have my heart and you won't use my mind but do what u want with my body / You can't stop my voice 'cause you don't own my life but do what u want with my body ). The twelfth title, "Mary Jane Holland", draws a direct reference to the drug marijuana , while "Gypsy" is about an inner urge for freedom.

Artpop is mostly a dance-pop album, which incorporates a variety of musical influences, from dubstep ("GUY", "Aura"), hip-hop / trap ("Jewels 'N' Drugs") to techno ("Swine") to pop-rock ("MANiCURE"). ^

publication

The release of Artpop was originally planned for spring 2013. However, Lady Gaga sustained a hip injury that required an operation, so the album was postponed indefinitely. In July 2013, she announced that she would release the album worldwide in November. In addition to the common formats (CD, music download), the album was also released in an app form, which provides bonus material for the album. Said app was developed by Gaga's creative team Haus Of Gaga , more precisely its technology branch TechHaus . After Björk's Biophilia (2011) and Jay-Z's Magna Carta Holy Grail (2013), Artpop is the third album to be released with an accompanying app. Artpop was supposed to be released for pre-order on iTunes on August 19th , but with the early release of “ Applause ” this date was brought forward to August 12th.

On October 7th, Lady Gaga unveiled the album cover. It shows a nude sculpture Gagas made by Jeff Koons , which sits behind a glowing blue ball. Various paintings, including Botticelli's Birth of Venus , can be seen in sections in the background . Two days later she announced the track list for the album. Artpop was first published in Japan on November 6, 2013, and the publication in German-speaking countries and the rest of the world took place successively in the following week.

Artpop was first officially announced on July 12, 2013. Lady Gaga announced that she would hold an ArtRave exhibition the evening before the release , during which the album will be officially released and projects in which the artist has worked with other artists, including Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin, avant-garde director Robert Wilson , performance artist Marina Abramović and artist Jeff Koons , who has worked, will be presented.

On September 1, 2013, Lady Gaga headlined the iTunes Festival in London. At the show, which she herself called “Swinefest”, she presented new songs from the album: “Aura”, “MANiCURE”, “ARTPOP”, “Jewels N 'Drugs” with rappers TI , Too Short and Twista , “Sexxx Dreams ”,“ Swine ”and“ Dope ”(announced back then as“ I Wanna Be With You ”) and“ Applause ”as an encore. However, rapper TI was absent as he was denied entry to the UK.

In a trailer for Machete Kills , in which Lady Gaga made her acting debut, the studio version of the song "Aura" was used for the first time. A lyric video of scenes and dialogues from the film, directed by director Robert Rodriguez , was released on October 9, 2013. In the course of October 2013 Lady Gaga put various excerpts of individual songs by Artpop on her YouTube channel, including "GUY", "ARTPOP", "Mary Jane Holland" and "Venus", which was released on October 27 as the album's promo single has been. At the end of October, Lady Gaga held a listening party for her album in the Berghain nightclub in Berlin .

At the beginning of May 2014 Lady Gaga started her fourth concert tour, titled after her third album. The tour included a total of 75 concerts and took the singer once around the globe, from North America to Asia via Oceania to Europe, see also ArtRave: The Artpop Ball .

Single releases

" Applause " was released on August 12, 2013 as the first single from the album. Originally planned for the 19th of the same month, the release was brought forward due to a leak. The official music video premiered on Good Morning America on August 19, 2013 . It was shot by the Dutch fashion photographer duo Inez Van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin , who also designed the artwork for the single.

Do What U Want ”, a collaboration with R&B singer R.Kelly , is the second release from Artpop . Originally planned as a promo single, the song reached the top of the iTunes charts within a few hours. The song received very positive reviews and was released as a second single instead of the originally planned " Venus " due to the feedback . The accompanying music video, which was shot by Terry Richardson , has remained unpublished to this day.

A third single from the album was released at the end of March, " GUY ". Together with the song, Lady Gaga published an art pop film in the form of an eleven minute long music video in which “ARTPOP” and “Venus” can also be heard. "GUY" could not build on the success of the previous singles.

Criticism

based on 30 reviews.

After the listening party in Berlin at the end of October, some German media gave their first opinion on Artpop . Andreas Bercholte (Spiegel Online) called the album “great utility music: a bit of pig rock, a lot of contemporary [...] R&B, great pop hooks, a few hip-hop beats and at least one heavy techno board. Globally valid power music that picks up everyone somewhere with its perfidious mass design. The songs have catchy titles like 'Aura', 'Sexxx Dreams', 'Venus', 'Dope' or 'Fashion!' and denounce body and brand cult as well as consumerism, while all of this is of course also celebrated at the same time. "Felix Johannes Enzian, who wrote an article for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , wrote:" As far as artistic subtleties can be discerned on this first hearing the musical style has changed a bit. Instead of hard rock Eurodance, more dubstep R&B. ”In an article for focus.de , Armin Fuhrer described the music presented as“ [b] ruthless mainstream possible, a pulpy mass of synthesizers combined with dull pounding rhythms. From a musical point of view, this is a standstill at 130 beats per minute. "

Jason Lipshutz from Billboard gave the album eighty-four points out of a hundred: “Lady Gaga has offered fans her most sonically and lyrically diverse album to date. [...] She makes absolute certain that every inch of her craft evolves and innovates. “[Lady Gaga has presented her fans with her album, both tonally and lyrically, which is the most versatile to date ... She makes it absolutely clear that every part is different Her work is constantly being developed and innovated.]
Ulf Kubanke from laut.de gave the album four out of five possible points and described the level of the album as “above average”: “With playful ease, she combines rhythmic and melodic opposites over the length of the album. [...] Plus a whole herd of catchy bridges and refrains, for which you can forgive her many slip-ups with surprising ease. With pieces like the theme song, Lady Gaga elegantly continues where Kylie Minogue preceded in her numerous good moments. But it is best of all when it relies entirely on an organic sound costume in order to transform all of its own weirdness and Kafkaesque nerdiness into passionate outlaw romance. "

The journalist Sebastian Fasthuber of the Austrian weekly newspaper Falter gave a negative verdict on the album: “Nothing against carnival techno, which is again the order of the day, but the party that is celebrated here seems just as tense as Gaga's efforts by the art world to be accepted. Above all, there are no real hits. "
