background information

When the song was written, GUY didn't stand for "Girl Under You". At first it was an acronym for “Go Under You”. But this changed until the album was released.

Gaga confirmed the creation of GUY in an interview about her take on feminism with Joanna McGarry of Stylist Magazine. She said the song was about her exploration of modern feminism, subordinate to a man in exchange for strength.

“I actually wrote a song about it on my album. It's called GUY and it stands for Go Under You . Wearing make-up, smelling good, and having suckable, kissable, edible things between my limbs is something that I find empowering. I know when I've chosen the right man, I can let him have that. Some women feel oppressed by make-up and clothing and that is for them, they have every right to feel that. "

- Lady Gaga in an interview with Joanna McGarry (Stylist Magazine)

In GUY this is not the first collaboration between Lady Gaga and Zedd. The two recorded several songs together for Gaga's Artpop album. Furthermore, Gaga previously published two remix versions of Zedd's songs Born This Way and Marry the Night .

content

With the exception of the end of the song, all the rest of the lyrics by GUY are written in English, translated into German the title is "Mädchen unter dir". At the end of the song, Gaga counts down in German and repeatedly shouts the words "No Zedd!", An allusion to the co-composer and producer. The music and the text were written jointly by Stefani Germanotta and Anton Zaslavski . Musically, the song moves in the realm of dance pop and electronic music . In addition to the main vocals by Gaga, the voice of Sonja Durham can be heard at the beginning in an introduction. The tempo of the piece is 110 beats per minute . It is composed in the key of C minor . Gaga's voice ranges from D 3 to C 5 .

Billboard's Jason Lipshutz described GUY as "a gruesome dance siren that makes the distinction between gender balance and intentional sexual submission." The song begins with a “ spoken word reference” about the Greek god Himeros , the son of Aphrodite .

"Touch me, touch me, don't be shy,
I'm in charge like a GUY
I'll lay down face up this time,
under you like a GUY"

- Refrain, original

"Touch me, touch me, don't be shy,
I'll guide you like a GUY
I'm lying face up this time,
under you like a GUY"

- Refrain, translation

Music video

Hearst Castle's Neptune Pool - location of the music video

The music video was shot at Hearst Castle in California . Gaga announced the music video in an interview with Savannah Huthrie on March 21 for Today . A two-minute clip of the video was released on Dateline NBC on March 22nd, hours before its official release . Gaga directed it himself.

In addition to the main part with the title song, the almost twelve-minute music video contains three other songs from the Artpop album . The video begins with a group of business people arguing for money. Nearby lies the fallen Lady Gaga, costumed as a bird-like creature with an arrow shot from the sky in her chest. An instrumental version of the song Artpop can be heard in the background. The businessmen frolicking around Lady Gaga move away, then she stumbles to a safe place and removes the arrow stuck in her chest. Gaga manages to struggle to get on her feet and to save herself to the nearby palace, before which she collapses in front of the gate. The song Venus sounds. She is carried to the central pool, where people wrap her in petals and drop her into the water for healing. The song GUY begins when Gaga, now in a white dress, straightens up again. This is followed by dance sequences with Gaga in various clothes, including a blue dress and a white swimsuit. Andy Cohen and the housewives from the American television series The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills have a cameo . With the help of the YouTuber SkyDoesMinecraft, the singer resuscitates Michael Jackson , Mahatma Gandhi , John Lennon and Jesus to use their blood as a means of production for the GUY clones. Further dance scenes, among others with Lady Gaga in a clone factory, follow. Gaga, Lisa Vanderpump and Kyle Richards get out of a car in black clothes before shooting money cannons at the entrance of an office building. The three now run down a hallway to kill the senior office workers and replace them with GUY clones. The film ends when a horde of these same clones leave the palace grounds. The four-minute credits then run while the song Manicure plays .
