Joanne is the fifth studio album by the American singer Lady Gaga . It was released worldwide on October 21, 2016 under the Interscope and Streamline labels . As singles were Perfect Illusion , Million Reasons and Joanne decoupled.

Emergence

After completing her third studio album Artpop , Gaga changed management and joined Artist Nation. After the jazz album Cheek to Cheek , which she recorded with jazz singer Tony Bennett in 2014 , she began working on her new studio album. In 2015 and 2016, she repeatedly shared photos on her social networks in which she was seen in the studio with producers RedOne , Giorgio Moroder , Mark Ronson and Nile Rodgers and others. Ronson confirmed that Kevin Parker, frontman of the band Tame Impala , was involved in the work on the album.

On September 9, 2016, Perfect Illusion was released as the first single from the album as a download worldwide , but it could not build on the success of the previous songs. The album was released in two different versions, namely the standard version with eleven tracks and the deluxe version with 14 tracks. On October 5th, Lady Gaga started the Dive Bar Tour . The next day, Million Reasons was released as a single. On October 17, 2016, the album was already sold in Media Markt branches in Belgium , and the entire album was leaked on the Internet . The album was officially released on October 21, 2016. On December 22, 2017, the song Joanne was released as a single in Italy. So this is the third single from the album. On January 26, 2018, Joanne was also released as a single worldwide.

Promotion and tour

To promote the album, Lady Gaga presented excerpts from it at the Royal Variety Performance , the American Music Awards and the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show in Paris . In February, she headlined the Super Bowl LI halftime show . She also sang with Metallica at the 2017 Grammy Awards .

In February 2017, the Joanne World Tour was announced, which is scheduled to begin in Vancouver on August 1st . The singer also comes to Germany for concerts in Hamburg , Cologne and Berlin . In the United States, Lady Gaga will also play in stadiums for the first time with the tour.

Cover

The cover shows Gaga against a light blue background. She is pictured from the left and looks into the distance. The focus of the cover is her ear, which, as Gaga often says himself, aims to focus on the music. She wears a pink hat and it says "LADY GAGA / JOANNE" above it.

The album debuted at number 1 on the album charts in the USA and sold 201,000 copies worldwide in the first week. After appearing at the Super Bowl, it returned to the American charts and sold 74,000 copies. In October 2017, one year after its release date, the album went platinum for more than 1,000,000 units sold in the United States.

In the UK, the album reached # 3 on the charts and was awarded gold for more than 100,000 copies sold, similar to previous solo album Artpop . In Germany the album reached the 6th place, in Austria the 9th place and in Switzerland the 3rd place.

According to IFPI , Joanne was ranked 22nd among the bestsellers of 2016 and sold 1,000,000 copies worldwide, even though it was only available for 9 weeks for the 2016 calendar year.
