Karen Wilhelmi Karapetjan ( Armenian Կարեն Վիլհելմի Կարապետյան , English Karen Karapetyan ; born August 14, 1963 in Stepanakert , Nagorno-Karabakh Autonomous Oblast , Azerbaijani SSR , Soviet Union ) is an Armenian politician ( Republican Party ) who served from September 13, 2016 to April 17, 2018 Was Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia. Before that, he was mayor of the capital Yerevan from 2010 to 2011 .

After the resignation of Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan on April 23, 2018, Karapetyan was acting Prime Minister until May 8.

biography

Karapetjan studied "Applied Mathematics" at the State University of Yerevan and graduated with honors in 1985. In 1989 he defended his doctoral thesis in economics. In 2010 the future Prime Minister obtained his doctorate in this field.

Between 1998 and 2001 Karapetjan was the general director of the closed joint-stock company " Armenergo ". In 2001, at the suggestion of then President Robert Kocharyan, he was promoted to chairman of the board of the joint Russian-Armenian company "Armrosgasprom" .

On December 17, 2010, the council of elders of the city of Yerevan elected Karapetjan as the new mayor. A few weeks after taking office, in January 2011, Karapetjan asked everyone in the city administration to learn English. His initiative met with resistance, especially from older employees. They believed that the new mayor was trying to radically change the cadre in order to get rid of them.

In late January 2011, Karapetyan signed a law banning street trading in central Yerevan . Thereupon there was a protest action by those affected in front of the building of the city administration. a. demanded the resignation of the mayor.
