Howik Argami Abrahamjan ( Armenian Հովիկ Արգամի Աբրահամյան ; born January 24, 1958 in Mkhchyan , Armenian SSR (now Armenia )) is an Armenian politician ( Republican Party ) and was Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia from April 13, 2014 to September 8, 2016. He had previously been President of the Armenian Parliament .

Abrahamjan, born in 1958 in the village of Mkhchyan, which is now part of the Armenian province of Ararat , studied at the economics faculty of the Yerevan State University . From 1990–1991 he was department head at the Burasan brandy factory, and from 1991–1995 he managed the Artaschat wine and brandy factory.

He was a member of the Armenian Parliament from 1995 to 1999 , chairman of the Executive Committee of the Artashat City Council from 1995 to 1996, and Mayor of Artashat from 1996 to 1998. He was then governor of Ararat province from 1998-2000 . In 2000 he became Minister for Territorial Administration and was a member of the Cabinet on changing posts until 2008. From 2005 he was a member of the Security Council and 2007-2008 Deputy Prime Minister. From April 12 to September 5, 2008 he was head of the cabinet of President Serzh Sargsyan . After his brother Henrik's resignation as a member of parliament, he was elected to parliament on August 24, 2008 and President of Parliament on September 29. He resigned from the office of Parliamentary President on November 21, 2011, was re-elected to Parliament in the parliamentary elections on May 6, 2012 and was again President of Parliament. On April 13, 2014, President Serzh Sargsyan appointed him to succeed Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan, who resigned after protests against his pension reform .
