Father John Misty , actually Joshua Michael Tillman (* 3. May 1981 in Rockville , Maryland ) is an American rock musician and former band drummer .

Career

Joshua Tillman began his musical career as a drummer with Saxon Shore , among others , while he was still in college. In addition, he also began to write his own music and distribute self-made CD-Rs . On a tour in the backing band of Damien Jurado , he got the opportunity to perform on his own. He eventually signed with Fargo Records and released his first regular album, Minor Works, as J. Tillman. The label also reissued two of its earlier CD-Rs that same year. The following year the more elaborately produced album Cancer and Delirium was released , which was well received by the music press. Nonetheless, he replaced Nick Peterson as drummer for the Fleet Foxes over the next four years . It was the band's most successful period with two top albums in the UK and US charts.

Initially he also released other solo albums on the side, but when the band success didn't give him enough time, he decided to part with the Fleet Foxes and start his solo career again under the new name Father John Misty . The first Misty album Fear Fun was released on the indie label Sub Pop in 2012 . He made it into the US charts straight away . But it was only a respectable success with a musical reference to the Fleet Foxes. In 2015 he married the artist Emma Elizabeth Tillman and he made his solo breakthrough with the second, autobiographical album I Love You, Honeybear . It hit the top 20 in the US and the UK charts , reaching number 1 on US indie albums and number 3 on US rock albums. The song Chateau Lobby # 4 (In C for Two Virgins) was a minor radio hit. He was then nominated for a BRIT Award in the International Solo Artist category. In addition, Tillman, who also values his entire artistic performance, was nominated for a Grammy Award for album specials for the deluxe vinyl edition of his album .

In July 2016, he made a name for himself when he started talking about the entertainment industry and the dumbing down of the people at a festival in New Jersey , threw his program overboard and finally left the stage prematurely. In the same year he released the song Real Love Baby , which in turn was a minor radio hit, as the first track on a new album. It was published in spring 2017 and reached the top 10 in the USA and Great Britain. It was also able to place itself in German-speaking countries. For the Deluxe Edition , which he helped design, he received a Grammy for the best recording package.
