Damien Jurado

Damien Jurado (born November 12, 1972 in Seattle , Washington ) is an American musician .

Live and act

In the early 1990s, Damien Jurado recorded his first demo tapes under his own name. In 1995, he came across Jeremy Enigk, then still singer of Sunny Day Real Estate to a record deal with Sub Pop Records. Here he released two EPs and his debut album Waters Ave S in the following years . The reviews have been positive, especially 1999 for Rehearsals for Depature . However, the album received little public attention. In September 2000, Ghost of David was released , which was much more introverted than its pop-heavy predecessor. In early 2002, the rock record I Break Chairs was released , which he released with musician friends as Damien Jurado and Gathered in Song .

This fulfilled his contract with Sub Pop and, because he felt neglected by the label, he switched to the then still very small label Secretly Canadian , where in 2003 he produced the again highly acclaimed Where Shall You Take Me? and released On My Way to Absence two years later . And Now That I'm in Your Shadow was released in 2006 and Caught in the Trees followed in 2008 . His ninth studio album, Saint Bartlett , was released at the end of May 2010 . Maraqopa , with whom he made the first jump on the Billboard charts, followed in February 2012.

Between these regular albums, EPs, singles, collections of rarities, etc., appeared again and again, so that Damien Jurado can look back on over 30 releases on small and very small labels to date.

Over the years he has also worked with musicians who are friends, including a. with the songwriter Rosie Thomas and, until 2003, also closely with David Bazan (ex Pedro The Lion), with whom he played in several hardcore bands (including Coolidge) in the 1990s. From 2002 to 2008, Eric Fisher was his closest musical partner. From 2006 he was an integral part of the band Damien Jurado together with cellist Jenna Conrad . For his album Saint Bartlett he split from his band and worked closely with the musician Richard Swift for the first time. In 2013 the song Almost Home he sang appeared on the Moby album Innocents .

His mostly very dark, sketchy texts brought him comparisons with Raymond Carver.

At the end of 2007 Damien Jurado founded the band Hoquiam with his brother Drake . Her first, self-titled album was released in late February 2010 in an edition of 500 on St. Ives Records, a sub-label of Secretly Canadian.
