Inez van Lamsweerde (born September 25, 1963 in Amsterdam , Netherlands ) and Vinoodh Matadin (born September 29, 1961 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands) are a Dutch fashion photographer duo. They are known for their diverse work for fashion magazines, advertising campaigns, and their independent art work.

biography

Vinoodh Matadin studied fashion design in Amsterdam between 1981 and 1985 . When he met Inez van Lamsweerde in 1986, she studied art at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy (1985–1990). The two became partners, both privately and professionally. Her work alternated between art and fashion. Instead of commenting on the fashion and art scene from outside, they became part of the system. They are still known for their images, which can be interpreted both critically and as somewhat unsettling. Matadin and van Lamsweerde played with the digital manipulation of photos early on. It allowed them to explore questions about gender and sexuality, reality, superficiality and identity.

Inez spent a year (1992–1993) in New York through a studio grant from MoMA PS1 , where she produced two series of photos that helped her breakthrough; Final Fantasy , with photos that show a mixture of bodies with both youthful and adult features, inspired by the hype surrounding slim supermodel Kate Moss , asking about the child as a symbol of innocence; and Thank You Thighmaster , life-size dolls merge with real models, creating a sophisticated interplay between glamor and horror.

In 1995 van Lamsweerde produced the more subtly manipulated series The Forest , which features men with female body features.

Matadin and van Lamsweerde continued to explore the limits of reality, for example by placing photos behind the models, thereby creating a gap between the real models and the apparently artificial background. This can be seen, for example, in Go Cindy, Go Cindy from 1995.

In 1997 they worked for the first time with the French art and design duo M / M Paris. The result was the advertising campaign for fashion designer Yōji Yamamoto , which is counted as an important contribution in the history of fashion photography. The collaboration continues today and includes among its advertising campaign for Balenciaga, and the video for the title Hidden Place of Björk produced.

The digital manipulations of their work became more subtle as they were developing their own artistic language, and currently the only manipulations in their work are normal retouching.

In 2009 an issue of Stern Fotografie was published with the artist couple's first retrospective.
