Gucci ( Italian . [ ˈꞬutʃi ]) is an Italian fashion company specializing in women's, men's and children's clothing and accessories in the luxury goods segment with retail outlets worldwide.

The Guccio Gucci SpA belongs since 2004 all the way to the French luxury goods Corporation Kering , where more luxury brands are represented.

history

The company was founded in 1921 by master saddler Guccio Gucci as a small workshop for leather goods and luggage in Florence . After opening further branches in Italy , Gucci launched a handbag with a bamboo handle ( bamboo bag ) in 1947 - actually as an emergency solution due to a lack of resources . The company made a. with fine leather goods and luxurious handbags - the design often inspired by equestrian sport - a name.

In the years after the company's founder died in 1953, the brand enjoyed great success and expanded worldwide. In the mid-1960s, the well-known symbol of the two interconnected stirrups or the intertwined " G " (for Guccio Gucci ) was used for the first time. A clothing line was established in the 1970s and the first fashion show took place in 1981. In 1974 the company's first perfume, the Gucci No. 1 , launched; the first men's fragrance followed in 1976. Since then, numerous Gucci perfumes have appeared, including Gucci No. 3 (women, 1985), Nobile (men, 1988), Envy (women, 1997; men, 1998), Rush (women, 1999; men, 2000), Gucci by Gucci (women, 2007; men, 2008), Gucci Flora (women, 2009 and variations after), Gucci Guilty (women, 2010; men, 2011 and variations after) and Gucci Bloom (women, 2017).

Due to serious internal disputes over the ownership of the founding family, the company collapsed in the 1980s, which in 1989 led to a 50% sale to the US Arab investment company "Investcorp International" from Bahrain . At the same time, the American Bergdorf Goodman head shopper Dawn Mello was appointed chief designer as the first non-member of the Gucci family. The grandson of the company founder, Maurizio Gucci, sold the remaining 50% of the company to Investcorp in 1993 after he had paid off the other heirs and was killed in an assassination attempt in 1995, for which his ex-wife Patrizia Reggiani was later blamed. At the end of 1995, the Gucci company, now separated from the family, was listed on the New York , Amsterdam and London stock exchanges (SEAQ). In 1998 the company moved to London.

After a takeover battle with LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton between 1999 and 2002 in court, Gucci has belonged almost entirely (99.4%) to the luxury goods group Kering since 2004 (until 2013: PPR or previously Pinault-Printemps-Redoute SA), Paris. Bernard Arnault , head of LVMH, started buying Gucci shares in 1999. Fearing a takeover, Gucci dumped new shares to dilute Arnault's stake in the company. At the same time, the then CEO of Gucci, Domenico de Sole, contacted Arnault's competitor François Pinault from PPR (now Kering ), who subsequently acquired 40% of Gucci shares and thus pushed LVMH back. PPR finally integrated the Gucci brand into the newly created luxury division Gucci Group , in which other luxury brands were bundled. Gucci CEO de Sole resigned in 2004 and was replaced by Gucci manager Mark Lee. In mid-2004, Gucci's listing was permanently discontinued . In 2010, Gucci's operational headquarters were relocated from London to Cadempino in Switzerland. To mark the company's 90th anniversary, the group launched the Gucci Museum in the Palazzo della Mercanzia in Florence in autumn 2011, which has hosted well-known art exhibitions ever since.

Gucci chief designer Alessandro Michele, 2015

In 2018, the Gucci Museum was renamed "Gucci Garden" under the direction of Creative Director Alessandro Michele. The “Gucci Garden Galleria” also houses the museum's exhibition rooms, which are curated by fashion and art critic Maria Luisa Frisa. Furthermore, the complex now houses a Gucci store with selected items and a restaurant called “Gucci Osteria” by the three-star chef Massimo Bottura.

The Gucci brand

The Gucci brand did not become a coveted luxury label again until the mid-1990s, when the American designer Tom Ford , who had been working as a women's fashion designer at Gucci since 1990 and ordered in 1994 as the successor to Dawn Mello, was also the American designer Tom Ford , who from 1999 also began producing prêt-à-porter -Lines designed by Yves Saint Laurent , received international recognition for his work at Gucci. Under Ford, Gucci propagated extremely sensual and elegant fashion with sometimes daring cuts in women's fashion and designs in the dandy style in men's fashion. Ford left Gucci after 13 years in April 2004 together with Gucci managing director Domenico de Sole, because both of them could not agree with the PPR management on the continuation of the Gucci brand.

Ford's successor at Gucci was his long-term employees Alessandra Facchinetti (women's fashion), Frida Giannini (accessories) and John Ray (men's fashion). In 2005 Giannini also took over the position of the departing Facchinetti and in 2006 also the duties of Ray, and was therefore the sole creative head of the Gucci brand. In 2013 a turnover of three and a half billion euros was achieved; after that, sales fell. Giannini left her post in January 2015.

Long-time Gucci employee Alessandro Michele was appointed Giannini's successor in January 2015 and only had a few days to present his first women's collection. Under Michele, a radical change in image took place at Gucci: cuts and eccentric patterns reminiscent of the 1970s, brightly colored color combinations, wild animal and plant prints and applications, a dissolution of gender boundaries in clothing, downright stale accessories such as nerd glasses, Inconsistent style mixes, the ubiquitous use of the Gucci lettering, etc. were initially ridiculed by the established fashion critics, but were reflected in continuously increasing sales figures for Gucci. Gucci advertising campaigns spread via social media, in which groups of young models are supposed to convey happiness, nonchalance and lightheartedness, as well as redesigned stores and prominent Gucci customers such as Jared Leto , contributed to the appeal of the fashion brand, so that in the press of one “Gucci hype” was spoken and Gucci was named the world's most sought-after fashion brand in 2016. For his work at Gucci, Michele received the “International Fashion Designer of the Year” award in 2015 and the “International Accessory Designer” award at the British Fashion Awards in 2016 ; In 2016 he received the International Award of the CFDA and in the same year was named the best designer of the year by the British GQ . In 2017, Gucci generated sales of more than 6.2 billion euros.

The Yves Saint-Laurent brand (fashion and cosmetics) was bought by Sanofi Beauté at the end of 1999 , a majority stake in Bottega Veneta was secured in early 2001 and the watch manufacturer Bédat & Co. , acquired in 2000, was sold again in 2009. YSL Beauté was sold to L'Oréal in 2008 . The Wella subsidiary Cosmopolitan Cosmetics , which belongs to the Procter & Gamble Group, manages the licensing rights for Gucci's own fragrance range .

Gucci CEO Mark Lee was followed by Bottega Veneta Chef Patrizio di Marco at the end of 2008. Di Marco, partner and husband of Frida Giannini since mid-2015, was replaced by Marco Bizarri in early 2015. In 2011, Kering dissolved the Gucci Group. Since then, Gucci has been an equivalent subsidiary within the Kering Group alongside the brands that were formerly bundled in the Gucci Group.

Gucci employed around 11,500 people in 2017. At the end of 2010, the company operated 317 Gucci stores worldwide. In 2017 there were 529 own Gucci stores.
