Bottega Veneta is an Italian fashion and accessories company that is internationally known for its high-priced leather goods . The headquarters of the company , which was founded in Veneto in 1966 , is in Milan , the production facility in Montebello Vicentino , and the headquarters are in Cadempino, Switzerland . Bottega Veneta was acquired by the Gucci Group in 2001 and has been part of the French Kering group ever since  .

history

Bottega Veneta was founded in 1966 in Vicenza, Italy  by entrepreneurs Michele Taddei and Renzo Zengiaro. The company name means 'Venetian workshop'. The company's aim from the very beginning was the handcrafted production of leather goods. The company developed a typical leather braiding, called  Intrecciato ( it. For "braided"), which is decorates the outside of many of its products and largely associated with the brand.

In the 1970s, the company, with the slogan "started When your own initials are enough (" If your own dt. " Initials aureichen") to advertise that should underline a waiver of brand logos on the products. The first retail store outside of Italy opened on Madison Avenue in Manhattan in 1972 . Laura Braggion, then wife of Taddei, took over the management of the America business. In 1975 shoes were added to the range. Taddei and Zengiaro retired from business in the late 1970s. Braggion, meanwhile divorced from Taddei, took over the creative direction and her new husband Vittorio Moltedo took over the management. By the early 1980s, Bottega Veneta had developed into a brand of the international jet set; Customers included Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and ex-Empress Farah PahlaviAndy Warhol , whom Braggion met in New York and for whom she had worked as a secretary for a year in the late 1970s, made a short film for the company in 1980.

From the late 1980s, Bottega Veneta's success began to wane. The company made the mistake of changing its image, neglecting product quality and decorating the products with a “BV” logo. In 1998, under Laura Moltedo's direction and with the help of American designers Edward Buchanan and Manuela Morin, Bottega Veneta launched a clothing line that was presented on the catwalk at Milan Fashion Week . In 2000, Moltedo commissioned British designers Giles Deacon and Stuart Vevers as well as stylist Katie Grand to try to modernize the brand with bright colors and logo prints. In the same year Bottega Veneta's Milan headquarters, which is still used today with a design studio, was set up on the outer ring road of downtown Milan.

In February 2001, when Bottega Veneta was on the verge of bankruptcy , the troubled company was taken over by what was then the Gucci Group for $ 156 million . Between 1999 and 2001, what was then the PPR group bought the Gucci Group, and thus Bottega Veneta, and renamed itself Kering in 2013 . The Moltedos left the company and Bottega Veneta's fashion division was temporarily suspended. Tom Ford , Gucci's creative director between 1990 and 2004, appointed the German designer Tomas Maier , who had previously worked for Sonia Rykiel and Hermès and who Ford knew from New York, as chief designer of Bottega Veneta in June 2001  . After he had been entrusted with the management of product and shop design through to advertising at Bottega Veneta, Maier had visible logos removed from the brand's products and instead focused on the intrecciato braided pattern and the artisanal production of the items. The American Vogue described the image change as an example of the then emerging “stealth wealth”, that is, subtle, subliminal prosperity. Maier presented his first prêt-à-porter fashion show for women in February 2005 and the first men's fashion show in June 2006 at Milan Fashion Week. In April 2006 the company launched its first line of jewelry , which is manufactured in Pforzheim , and expanded the range to include interior and furniture design. In 2011 the women's fragrance Bottega Veneta was launched together with Coty Inc. , the equivalent for men in 2013. Since then, more of the company's perfumes have appeared. Between 2011 and 2012 Maier set up suites for Bottega Veneta in the St. Regis Hotels in Rome and Florence and the Park Hyatt in Chicago. In September 2016, Bottega Veneta celebrated the company's 50th anniversary at its annual fashion show at Milan's Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera . At the same time Maier's 15th anniversary as creative director was celebrated.

In the 2001 financial year, Bottega Veneta's sales were around 36 million euros; 2005 around 160 million euros; 2009 approx. 402 million euros; In 2012 it was 945 million euros; In 2013 more than one billion euros was generated. Sales at Bottega Veneta have stagnated since 2015 (sales: 1.3 billion euros), and decreased from 2016. From 2001 the CEO of Bottega Veneta was the Italian Patrizio di Marco and from 2009 the Italian Marco Bizarri, who switched to Gucci in 2014. He was followed by the Italian Carlo Alberto Beretta, a former Zegna manager, who was replaced in September 2016 by the German Claus-Dietrich Lahrs , a former Dior and Boss manager. In June 2019, Bartolomeo Rongone replaced Claus-Dietrich Lahrs as CEO.

On June 13, 2018, Kering announced the departure from Maier after 17 years. In the press, it was suspected that Maier's subtle designs in times of flashy and extremely high-turnover designs at the Kering subsidiaries Gucci (2017 sales: 6.2 billion euros), Saint Laurent (2017 sales: 1.5 billion euros) and Balenciaga no longer fit in with the luxury goods company's strategy. On June 15, 2018, Kering named the British and former Céline design director Daniel Lee as chief designer at Bottega Veneta.

Collaborations

Bottega Veneta works with well-known photographers on advertising campaigns, such as the "Art of Collaboration" series with  Juergen Teller  (autumn 2015),  Robert Longo  (autumn 2010) and  Nan Goldin  (spring 2010). In 2012 Bottega Veneta published a first book about the company's history and craftsmanship. The book is the result of a collaboration between Maier himself, the New York advertising specialist Sam Shahid and several fashion journalists. A second book on the "Art of Collaboration" project was published in October 2015.

Atelier in Montebello Vicentino

In 2013 Bottega Veneta opened a new atelier in Montebello Vicentino. The complex was restored and built with a focus on environmentally friendly and sustainable building (the so-called LEED guidelines) under Maier's supervision. According to Maier, keeping Bottega Veneta in Vicenza is essential to maintaining the brand's traditions and ideals. The studio now also houses the Scuola dei Maestri Pellettieri di Bottega Veneta - the company's own school for the training of employees - as well as the archives and the museum of Bottega Veneta. The school, which originally opened in the summer of 2006, is intended to train and promote future generations of leather craftsmen in view of the importance of craftsmanship and the declining number of master saddlers in Italy. The trainees have to complete a three-year teaching program before they are allowed to work in the studio themselves.

Boutiques

Bottega Veneta products are sold worldwide. In 2001 there were 21 Bottega Veneta stores. By 2007 over 100 more had been opened; In 2017 there were 251 boutiques in 43 countries. In September 2013 Bottega Veneta inaugurated its first “maison” ( French for “house”) in a historic building on Via Sant'Andrea in Milan. The boutique with an area of over 1000 m² was the first to combine all of the brand's products under one roof, including collections from the areas of leather goods, prêt-à-porter for women and men, shoes, jewelry, glasses, fragrances, luggage, Furniture and living. In 2015 Bottega Veneta announced the opening of a home store in Via Borgospesso, Milan, which exclusively sells furniture and home accessories. The 205 m² boutique on the ground floor of the Palazzo Gallarati Scotti from the 18th century was set up by Bottega Veneta's creative director Tomas Maier to present furniture, lighting as well as table and home decorations. Bottega Veneta opened another maison on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills in May 2016 and one on Madison Avenue in Manhattan in 2018.
