Tomas Maier

Tomas Maier (* 1957 as Thomas Maier in Pforzheim ) is a German fashion designer . He worked in Florida until 2018 for his own fashion company named after his full name and was chief designer for Bottega Veneta from 2001 to 2018 .

Maier grew up as the son of an architect in the Black Forest , attended a Waldorf school and at the age of 19 went to Paris to study at the École de la chambre syndicale de la couture parisienne . He then worked for almost twenty years as a freelancer for Guy Laroche , Sonia Rykiel , Iceberg , Revillon Frères and Hermès , among others , and had up to five different clients at the same time.

At 40, Maier moved to Miami , Florida and began designing and selling swimwear under his name. In 1997 he founded Tomas Maier LLC with his American partner Andrew Preston, who had worked for the State Department in Paris . For stylistic reasons, Maier removed the 'h' from his first name. A separate online shop was opened in 1998; the first store was inaugurated in 2004 in Miami Beach . Further stores in East Hampton and Palm Beach followed. Maier moved his design studio to Delray Beach in 2008 . The range was finally expanded to include clothing for women and men, accessories such as handbags and small leather goods , shoes, jewelry and (sun) glasses. One trademark used in his collections is a stylized palm tree. In 2013, Kering joined the company as an investor. Two stores opened in New York City in 2014 and 2015; the other Tomas Maier stores were then closed. In 2014 Maier designed three scented candles for Diptyque . In 2017 Maier worked with Puma and brought out his version of the Roma sports shoe in 1968 . In 2018, he entered into a collaboration with Japanese retailer Uniqlo on a low-priced fashion collection for women and men.

From 2001, at Tom Ford's request, Maier worked as creative director for Bottega Veneta, which was then taken over by Gucci . Maier and Ford had known each other through Ford's partner Richard Buckley from Paris since the mid-1980s. Maier, who subsequently commuted between Milan, New York City and Florida, designed bags and accessories for Bottega Veneta as well as clothing and finally furniture, watches, perfume, jewelry and porcelain from 2005 onwards. One of his decisions was to forego clearly visible logos at Bottega Veneta. For the jewelry collections he worked with goldsmiths in his hometown, for porcelain with KPM . Maier designed six collections a year for Bottega Veneta. The fact that Bottega Veneta's sales increased from 36 million euros in 2001 to 1.3 billion euros in 2015 and that the once almost insolvent fashion brand successfully re-established itself in the luxury segment are largely credited to Maier. In June 2018, Kering, the parent company of Bottega Veneta, announced that Maier was leaving the Italian fashion house after 17 years. As a result, Kering also ended the collaboration with the fashion brand Tomas Maier , which was then discontinued.

Maier lived in Miami from the late 1990s, in Gulf Stream , Palm Beach County from 2006 to 2018 , and eventually moved to Palm Beach. He is considered shy, reserved and modest. Maier is described in fashion circles as the most important German fashion designer after Karl Lagerfeld .
