history

The company was founded in 1961 by Desmond Knox-Leet, Christiane Gautrot and Yves Coueslant. You opened a store on Boulevard Saint-Germain in Paris . At first they offered various fabrics, home furniture and also English perfumes. In 1963 the first scented candle was offered as an in-house creation. It was not until 1968 that the store introduced its first own eau de toilette with the name “L'eau” in its range. From this point on, the company strategy changed and the sale of eaux de toilette, room fragrances and scented candles became the main business. In 2005, Diptyque was acquired by an equity fund Manzanita Capital Ltd. bought in London.
