Fine bag maker

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A fine bag maker or portfolio maker is a craftsman who produces so-called portfolios, i.e. wallets and briefcases made of leather , plastics or textiles .

The profession has become very rare in the German-speaking area today. Since the 1960s and 70s, the production of leather goods has increasingly shifted to cheaper production abroad. From the 19th century to the 1960s, the center of leather goods production was the region around Offenbach am Main .

Portefeuillers (in the southern Hessian dialect: “portefellers”) were also known as craftsmen who produced containers ( cases ) for storing and selling jewelry products.

Related professions

Related historical professions are bag maker , bag maker , sackler, riemer , saddler and fine saddler . While the fine bag maker makes small leather goods, the saddler, for example, processes heavy leather goods into everyday objects for agriculture and industry .

Handbags, wallets, cases and jewelery boxes are made in the fine bag and bag-making shop, and suitcases, satchels and briefcases are made in the fine saddlery. The boundaries between the fine leather goods manufacturing professions are fluid with regard to the products, but there are differences in the way of working.
