Etui ( French , also sheath ) is a container for storing various utensils or valuables. Depending on its content, it is called z. B. Glasses , jewelry , nail care, fountain pen cases or pencil cases .

Brief description

  • Containers for writing utensils were originally referred to as pencil cases or pencil cases because the first writing implements were sharpened nibs . Only later did the French name Etui appear, especially in Switzerland and Germany on the Lower Rhine, in Westphalia and in southern Lower Saxony. Elsewhere, instead of the French term, especially in Germany, it is sometimes referred to as "pencil case" or "loafers", in Austria as "pennal" or "feather pennal".
  • A case can be made of wood, metal (e.g. aluminum ), plastic , leather , synthetic leather or fabric . The inside is often lined with soft material such as velvet , velor , silk or leather. The shape is determined by the content, so it is usually elongated, narrow and flat. Either folding mechanisms, zippers, small snap locks or the lids can be removed completely for opening.
