Pencil case
A pencil case (for the regional names see below) is a fold-out folder, often with a zipper on the side , made of fabric, plastic or leather .
Be in the commonly used at schools Federmappe Provision for felt-tip pens , crayons , pencils , pen , ruler , sharpener and eraser . Often there is also a small pocket-like compartment.
One of the forerunners of the pencil case is the pencil case .
Surname
In Austria feather pennal is the predominant term, regionally there is still feather box . In South Tyrol, partly also in Vorarlberg, pen box is known.
In Switzerland, only the name case is used . Pencil case is the common name there for a (simple) wooden pencil case with a hinged lid (with hinges), which has not been used since the 1980s.
The most widespread term in Germany is a pencil case or, in its diminutive form, a pencil case . By contrast, in the far north and northeast of Germany Federtasche use, in the southern Rhineland, in Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland and Baden-Wuerttemberg it will simply pencil case called in parts of Baden-Württemberg Mäpple . Feather boxes occur in western Saxony . The term school case is widespread in the Lower Rhine, Westphalia and southern Lower Saxony . The term pencil case comes from the fact that the nibs and later the pen holder were kept in it. In Grimm's dictionary there is also mention of a pen case and a spring box (theca pennaria) as a “vessel for storing pens”.

In the more expensive versions there is also a compartment in which a set square can be stored.
Cases in which the writing utensils are kept unsorted are also widespread . These are colloquially known in the north and west of Germany as lazy people and in the south of Germany they are widely known as pencil cases . In the rest of Germany, as well as in Austria (Pennal) and Switzerland (Etui), the majority of the terms used are the same as for the rectangular folders.
