Coty Inc. is a listed perfume and cosmetics company based in New York . It goes back to a company founded in 1904 by the perfumer François Coty in Paris , which was early in business in the United States. The company is majority owned by JAB Holding .

history

From 1963 to 1992, Coty was a subsidiary of the pharmaceutical company Pfizer . In 1992 the German specialty chemicals company Joh.A. The British cosmetics manufacturer Rimmel was taken over in 1996 . By taking over the Fragrances Division (UCI) from Unilever in May 2005, Coty became the world's largest manufacturer of fragrances for the mass market.

In 2015, Coty acquired various cosmetics and care brands from competitor Procter & Gamble for 12.5 billion dollars , including Clairol, Wella , Max Factor and the perfumes of the Hugo Boss, Gucci, Lacoste and Bruno Banani brands. In November 2019, Coty acquired a 51 percent majority stake in Kylie Cosmetics from Kylie Jenner , a US influencer ; At the end of June 2020, Coty also announced a $ 200 million investment for a 20% stake in KKW, the cosmetics company of its half-sister Kim Kardashian West .

In May 2020, Coty sold a 60% stake in Wella and other brands in the field of professional cosmetics and hair products to the financial investor KKR ; this is being done in a strategic partnership in which Coty will remain a minority shareholder in these activities and KKR will also acquire shares in Coty.
