Max Factor
Max Factor, Sr. (born September 15, 1877 in Zduńska Wola or Łódź as Maksymilian Faktorowicz ; † August 30, 1938 in Beverly Hills , California ) was a Polish - American cosmetics entrepreneur .
Life
Maksymilian Faktorowicz was born in 1872 or 1877 in what was then Russian-occupied Poland in or near Łódź into a Jewish family. At the age of nine he was already working for a local wig maker and beautician. As a teenager he completed his training with stays in Warsaw , Berlin and Moscow . As a result, he quickly became the official cosmetic advisor for the royal family and the Royal Opera .
At the age of 27, Faktorowicz emigrated with his family to the USA, where he first demonstrated his skills at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in 1904 .
In 1908 he moved to Los Angeles and founded Max Factor & Company . It was part of Procter & Gamble from 1991 to 2015 and was sold to Coty Inc. in 2015 .
From 1914 on, Faktorowicz developed special means for the Hollywood film industry , which took into account the requirements that differed from those of the theater, and quickly became famous as a star beautician ; the term makeup first became popular through him. He also created waterproof mascara , invented lip gloss in 1930 and so-called pan cake makeup in 1937.
Factor died in 1938. His grave is in Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery in Culver City , California . In 1981 he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame .
The company was continued by his son, Max Factor Jr. (1909-1996; born Francis Factor ).

- Factor's great-grandson, serial rapist Andrew Luster (* 1963), is one of his heirs.
- His younger half-brother, John Factor (1892 - 1984; born as Iakov Faktorowicz ), was a gangster belonging to the Chicago outfit during the prohibition era .
