history

Benckiser

In 1823 Adam Benckiser acquired a salmiak hut in Pforzheim . The rise of the family began when the chemist Karl Ludwig Reimann founded a chemical factory together with Johann Adam Benckiser in Ludwigshafen in 1851 . The products were tartaric acid and citric acid and phosphates . The chemist Albert Reimann sen. (* August 21, 1868, † July 27, 1954), grandson of Ludwig Reimann, drove the business forward over the years.

The Reimann family lines consist of nine siblings, whose father Albert Reimann jun. (1898–1984) which belonged to Joh. A. Benckiser in Ludwigshafen. Albert Reimann adopted four children from his sister Else Dubbers and two children from a nephew. His three biological children from the long - term extramarital relationship with Emilie Landecker were later adopted. His marriage was childless. Each of the children was granted the same share of inheritance in the Joh. A. Benckiser company in 1984. The four children of the Reimann-Dubbers line, whom Albert Reimann had adopted from his sister, had their shares paid out in 1997 in order to go their own way.

The four siblings Renate Reimann, Wolfgang Reimann, Matthias Reimann and Stefan Reimann remained involved in the company Joh. A. Benckiser - JAB Holding has been based in Luxembourg since 2012 . Today their company share is 90 percent. About 10 percent of the shares in JAB are majority owned by the three JAB senior partners Bart Becht, Peter Harf and Olivier Goudet - each with equal shares. You run the JAB and make all investment decisions by mutual agreement.

The company founders later came into contact with the English company Reckitt & Sons and merged in 1999. In spring 2018, the family still held just under six percent of the newly formed detergent and cleaning agent company Reckitt Benckiser . By the end of the year, the share had dropped to 0.7%.

Well-known inventions in the 1950s helped the company to rise, including Albert Reimann jun. the water softener Calgon, in the 1960s the washing-up liquid Calgonit , and the denture care product Kukident. From 1996 to 2013, the Reimann family was the sole owner of the now listed perfume manufacturer Coty , a global cosmetics group with around 12,000 employees. Even after the IPO, the family holds 38.1 percent of the shares. The Reimanns acquired parts of the hair care specialist Wella in competition with the Düsseldorf competitor Henkel for 13 billion euros. In May 2012, the takeover of the cosmetics manufacturer Avon failed .

Entry into the coffee industry

The Reimann family has been involved in the coffee business through Benckiser since 2012 and took over the American coffee roasting companies and coffee house chains Peet's Coffee & Tea for 825 million euros and Caribou Coffee for 260 million euros. In April 2013 it was announced that Reimann was taking over DE Master Blenders 1753 (formerly Douwe Egberts), the Dutch market leader for coffee and tea products , which also produces Senseo coffee pods, for 7.5 billion euros .

In 2014 DE Master Blenders 1753 and Mondelēz International announced that they wanted to merge their coffee brands into a pure coffee company. The resulting joint venture , in which Mondelēz International will hold 49 percent, will be called Jacobs Douwe Egberts , be based in the Netherlands and run by the previous boss of DE Master Blenders in 1753. Jacobs Douwe Egberts has annual sales of around 7 billion US dollars and a world market share of 8 percent. In December 2015, together with other investors, the planned takeover of the US coffee capsule company and McDonald's supplier Keurig Green Mountain for $ 13.9 billion was announced in 2016 . Following approval from the regulatory authorities and shareholders, the closing of the transaction was announced in March 2016. JAB Holding has been the largest coffee company in the world since 2015.

coping with the past

The current generation of the Reimann family had the history of the family and company in the Third Reich examined by economic historian Paul Erker from the University of Munich ; Christopher Kopper , economic historian from Bielefeld University later confirmed the family's entanglement with the National Socialist regime: Albert Reimann and his son of the same name - the two Benckiser managing directors of the first and second half of the 20th century - were open supporters of Adolf Hitler , their company was considered even before the seizure of power as a NS model company . In factories and in the private villa of the Reimanns in Ludwigshafen, there was violence and abuse of forced laborers . Albert Reimann Jr. presented himself as a victim of the Nazis after the Second World War. The uninterrupted growth of the group is to a large extent due to the high proportion of slave labor . The hesitant processing of this history brought the Reimann grandchildren and the group massive criticism. Among other things, the Boston Globe headlined : “I found out that Nazi capital was behind my favorite coffee. Should I keep drinking it? "
