Schweppes
Schweppes is a global beverage brand with a complex distribution of distribution rights. The brand and distribution rights for Schweppes have been held in Germany and Austria by the Krombacher Brewery (Schweppes Deutschland GmbH) since 2006 , and in Switzerland by the Feldschlösschen Brewery (Rheinfelden) .
Creation of the brand
The watchmaker and silversmith Jacob Schweppe (1740–1821), who was baptized on March 16, 1740 in Witzenhausen, North Hesse, then worked in Switzerland, settled in Geneva in 1766 and worked as a master jeweler . From 1780 he developed a process in which water can be carbonated . Schweppe had this process patented in 1783, initially for medical purposes, only a few years after Joseph Priestley had already described a corresponding process.
Together with the mechanic Nicolas Paul and the pharmacist Henri-Albert Gosse , he founded a factory for the production of soda water in Geneva in 1790 . Because of limited local sales, the three partners set up a branch in Drury Lane in London in 1792 .
The beginnings of the Schweppe, Paul and Gosse company in London were difficult because of the great competition and political unrest that ruled through the war with France from 1793 . In a letter dated December 28, 1792, Schweppe wrote to his business partners that he was close to leaving the company. In 1796 the situation was reversed: Paul and Gosse left the project. Schweppe became the company is now alone in front of which is subsequently & Co. J.Schweppe called.
Schweppe himself sold three quarters of his share in 1802 and returned to Geneva. The company kept the name Schweppes . Until 2006 it was called Soft Drink Manufactures Schweppes Ltd. London. Famous since 1783 . In 1969 it was taken over by Cadbury , which was later called Cadbury Schweppes . In 2008, Schweppes and other beverage brands were spun off from Cadbury on the American market as the Dr Pepper Snapple Group . Outside of this, however, there are various companies that have acquired the rights to the brand and sales. The Coca-Cola Company is predominantly responsible in the world , but there are some relevant markets that are held by other manufacturers.
The name Indian Tonic Water. Lemonade , quinine on each Schweppes tonic water-label indicates Schweppes idea for malaria prophylaxis necessary but annoying Chinintablette in some lime juice and tonic water to dissolve. The colonial officers stationed in India accepted the drink enthusiastically. It soon proved to be a huge success throughout the British Empire , and Schweppes became purveyor to the royal court in 1831 . In 1836 it received the Royal Warrant - the royal recommendation.
Distribution rights
After belonging to the Kemp-Welch family for more than a century, the Schweppes Group came into the hands of Cadbury in 1969 . From 1998, distribution of the Schweppes brand was shared with The Coca-Cola Company : Cadbury retained the rights in 26 countries (in North America and Europe), while Coca-Cola took over distribution in 155 other countries, including the United Kingdom .
On February 2, 2006, Cadbury completed the sale of its European beverage operations to Blackstone Group and Lion Capital Group . On July 1, 2006, the Krombacher brewery took over the distribution rights to the Schweppes and Orangina brands for Germany and Austria, and the Feldschlösschen (Rheinfelden) brewery for Switzerland.
