The Feldschlösschen brewery is a beer brewery in Rheinfelden in the canton of Aargau and the headquarters of Feldschlösschen Getränke AG , the largest beverage manufacturer in Switzerland . The factory site with a dozen buildings is located southwest of the old town. The greater part of it is built in the castle style of historicism and is a listed building as a cultural asset of national importance .

development

The Feldschlösschen brewery, founded in 1876, initially set up its production facilities in the unadorned, sober facilities of an abandoned aniline factory. In 1882 the company began to expand production, which resulted in an expansion of the factory. The choice fell on the castle style, which was predominant in industrial architecture at the time . In 1892 the machine house and the brewhouse were built . With the expansion of the brewhouse in 1902, the factory finally assumed the character of a castle and the facilities taken over from the previous company disappeared. Around this time the company began to take over other breweries, such as the Holzach brewery in Aarau. Local competition existed in the form of the Rheinfeld company Salmenbräu .

In contrast to other companies, the architects commissioned by Feldschlösschen adopted the historicist design language as a leitmotif for decades when the production facilities were expanded . While the older buildings stand parallel to the edge of the slope, the extensions were built perpendicular to it after the turn of the century. Bricks were used throughout as building material ; yellow for the wall surfaces and red for decorations and covers . From the 1920s onwards, the neo-Gothic style was deviated from and the style of New Objectivity or Neoclassicism was increasingly adopted , although some basic castle-like elements were retained. A striking exception is the bottling plant, which was built in the 1970s as a standardized industrial building some distance from the existing factory complex.

The Danish brewery Carlsberg Group took over the Feldschlösschen brewery in 2000.

Important buildings

Detail view with fireplace

The core of the plant is the brewhouse built in 1908 and expanded in 1957. The windows in the basement are framed by Tudor arches , the windows on the three floors above are framed by blind arcades . The hall contains several copper brewing pans. The tall columns with their cube-shaped capitals in the older part of the hall are inspired by ancient Egyptian temples. The walls are lined with blue tiles, a marble staircase with Art Nouveau ornaments leads up to a raised area. A glass window in the central axis shows the profile of Theophil Roniger , one of the two company founders.

There is a niche in the line between the brewhouse and the machine house. There is the brewing pan in which Roniger first brewed beer in Magden in 1868 . The machine house contains the cooling systems. The inner walls are also lined with blue tiles at the bottom, and decorated in the upper part with symbols related to the brewing of beer (brewing stars below ). The old brewhouse from 1892 (today used as an administration building) rises up like a castle tower; The battlements with several small turrets and corner projections contribute in particular to this .

Next to the main complex is the “Schalander”, the residence and break house for the staff. Its façade is designed in a strict neoclassical style and has a central risalit structured with pilasters . The interior room is decorated with friezes by the artist Burkhard Mangold . In the style of pointillism , they depict the following scenes: Theophil Roniger during his first brewing attempts, the «Sonne» restaurant in Magden and the beer transport with horse-drawn vehicles. The fermentation and storage cellars and the former cooper's workshop are located in the western area of the facility.

On the northern edge of the factory premises are the stables for the brewery horses (1898), an inn (1890) and the former home of Mathias Wüthrich, the second company founder (1905).
