Life
Burkhard Mangold grew up in the same house as August Suter at Albanvorstadt 44, in Basel. After finishing school, he attended drawing and painting courses with Fritz Schider at the general trade school in Basel. From 1890 to 1893 he did an apprenticeship as a decorative painter. In 1894 he traveled to Paris , from 1894 to 1900 a longer stay in Munich followed , first as a student, then as a teacher at the art academy. Back then, Munich was a leader in poster art. Mangold became one of the exponents of Art Nouveau poster art in the first half of the 20th century. During this time he restored the murals of the Peleș Castle in Romania .
Mangold created wall and glass paintings, decorative designs for parades and celebrations, book illustrations, small graphics such as bookplates, diplomas, calendar graphics, festival cards and carnival lanterns. His achievements as a pioneer of modern artistic poster lithography and glass painting are significant. With Emil Cardinaux , Eduard Stiefel and Otto Baumberger, Mangold was one of the first artists to see poster design as a main occupation and an independent medium.
In 1900 Mangold returned to Basel. He married Anna Katharina Krauss from Franconia . The marriage produced three children. From 1903 onwards, numerous facade and wall paintings were painted in Basel (including Zwinglihaus , Rathaus , Rheinsprung 1, Hauptpost , "Zum Wolf", Restaurant Schuhmachernzunft, Restaurant "Zum Braunen Mutz", Hotel "Basler Hof", auditorium of the Gotthelf school building) and at the ETH Zurich , Kaserne Chur, ref. Urnäsch Church.
In 1905, his poster design for the Swiss Song Festival in Zurich received an award. From 1905 Mangold also dealt with glass painting. In 1911 he restored together with Otto Plattner facade pictures of Wilhelm Balmer of Basel Town Hall . Mangold and Plattner immortalized themselves there as the two faces behind bars. In the period from 1919 to 1921 Mangold created the windows of the Leonhardskirche in Basel, in the 1930s numerous panes for the «Warteck » brewery and its restaurants, from 1911 to 1912 two windows in the Konolfingen church in Art Nouveau style, in the war year 1915 the choir windows of the Church of Hasle near Burgdorf with the central theme of the Good Samaritan as a contemporary interpretation of the Konolfingen Window and also a series of «Dance of Death». Mangold was a friend of classical church music and an avid chorus singer.
From 1909 to 1911 he was a member of the Federal Art Commission and from 1909 to 1910 its president. Mangold designed various lithographs for the Swiss National Exhibition in 1914 . From 1915 he was a teacher of lithography and glass painting at the Basel vocational school for three years. One of his students was Niklaus Stoecklin .
Until 1929 Mangold was president of the commission of the trade school and the trade museum. He was also a book illustrator.
