Niklaus Stoecklin
Niklaus Stoecklin (born April 19, 1896 in Basel ; † December 31, 1982 there ) was a Swiss painter and graphic artist .
He is regarded as the main Swiss exponent of New Objectivity and Magical Realism, as well as an important poster designer.
Life
Stoecklin was the son of the businessman Johann Niklaus Stoecklin (1859-1923) and the Genoveva Fanny, née Müller (1859-1939). He was the brother of Franziska Stoecklin . He learned the art of painting from his uncle Heinrich Müller .
For decades, Stoecklin also devoted himself to poster design. Some of his works emerged from competitions organized by the Kunstkredit Basel-Stadt . He became a well-known personality in Basel through his public works, including the mural above the notice of marriage announcements on Basel's Münsterplatz (1920), and through his work as a lantern painter for the Basel Carnival . He also created some postage stamps for the Swiss Post.
In 1925 he was the only Swiss representative in Gustav Friedrich Hartlaub's exhibition Neue Sachlichkeit in the Kunsthalle Mannheim .
