Roller ferry at full speed

The Korneuburg – Klosterneuburg roller ferry is the only way for motor vehicles to cross the Danube between the Tulln Danube Bridge and the Vienna North Bridge . It connects the two Lower Austrian cities of Korneuburg on the left and Klosterneuburg on the right bank of the Danube. The exact location is the river kilometer 1941.7.

History, continuance

It was opened as a flying bridge in 1894 and finally destroyed in the winter of 1928/29 by the great ice rush on the Danube .

In 1935, the municipalities of Klosterneuburg and Korneuburg decided to rebuild the overpass as a roller ferry . The Augustinian Canons of Klosterneuburg participated in the project by assuming a third of the costs. On May 11, 1935, the ferry was launched and the topping-out ceremony for the foundation structures (including the 80 m groyne on the Klosterneuburg side) was celebrated on both banks . In the course of July 10, 1935, pioneers tensioned the 380 m long, 47.5 mm thick, 6,500 kg heavy steel cable. On September 12, 1935, the taxi ferry was officially opened.

The ferry has been privately owned since 1994 and is often used for a nostalgic tour of the Danube.

The ferry is designed for a load capacity of 25 tons or 40 people, it offers space for four passenger cars. The operating times are from 7 a.m. (on weekends from 8 a.m.) until dusk falls from March to the beginning of November. The taxi ferry is occasionally blocked due to floods or ice on the Danube.

Plans to replace the roller ferry with a fixed bridge have not yet been implemented, and neither has the plan for a tunnel that came up in 1899/1900.

On the morning of October 17, 2017, the ferry was severely damaged in a ship collision during heavy fog.
