The Basler Hauptpost is a sandstone building in the old town of Grossbasel . The building is located on Rüdengasse and is flanked by Freie Strasse and Gerbergasse. It was built as a department store from 1376 to 1378. From 1559 to 1596 an archway was built , which is assigned to Daniel Heintz and which was moved to Freie Strasse in 1853 on the occasion of the conversion to a post office. An extension of the building was carried out in 1881 under the direction of the Viennese cathedral builder Friedrich von Schmidt . 1886–1888 portrait medallions of people from science and technology ( Rowland Hill , Heinrich von Stephan , Samuel FB Morse , Alessandro Volta , George Stephenson , Louis Favre , Joseph Munzinger , Johann Heinrich Speiser , Wilhelm Eduard Weber , Daniel Bernoulli) were placed on the stock exchange wing against the Gerbergasse ), which were created by Achilles Schlöth . Burkhard Mangold created the murals in 1909/1910 and Coghuf created the picture “Movement” at the end of the 1920s; they were restored from 1973 to 1977.
