Life

Ernst Stocker was a son of the gardener and train driver Johannes Stocker and the younger brother of Hans Stocker . From 1920 to 1924 he made an apprenticeship as a locksmith and made sculptural experiments with Louis Léon Weber . From 1925 to 1927 Stocker stayed with his brother in Paris, where he found his way to painting via the metalworking and sculpting work with Jacques Lipchitz under the artist name Coghuf (from around 1927). He also undertook studies with Willi Baumeister . He received formative impulses from the works of Honoré Daumier , Vincent van Gogh , Amedeo Modigliani and Maurice Utrillos . Especially the painter Chaim Soutine had an inspiring effect on the young Stocker and stimulated him to do exciting expressive painting.

Under the pseudonym Coghuf, Ernst Stocker devoted himself entirely to painting. In 1928 he became a member of the newly founded artist group Rot-Blau II . From 1927 he created murals on public buildings. Several stays abroad followed, including from 1931 to 1932 in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière . In 1934 he was one of the co-founders of the short-lived artist group BBZ 8 .

Some of his works came out as winners in the competitions of the Kunstkredit Basel-Stadt or they were commissioned by the Kunstkredit. For example, Coghuf won the art credit for his mural Le Chant de l'Occident, on the back wall of the Sigristenhaus in the courtyard of the grammar school on Münsterplatz , Basel and for the mural for the Basel Main Post Movement or Workers on the Way to Work , from 1931-1934 Competition. The oil painting, which is considered one of his main works, did not correspond to the current zeitgeist. In 1957 it was removed, deposited in the art museum and replaced by a mural by Judith Müller (1923–1977) on the occasion of renewed renovation.

Other works were: the mural Les quatre heures , from 1937, for the Isaak Iselin school house or in 1955 the large mosaic Knowing and recognizing for the university building. Coghuf prevailed against Otto Abt , Karl Glatt , Walter Moeschlin and Gustav Stettler in this art credit competition . The mosaic consists of various types of natural stones, glass from Hebron , Venetian gold glass cubes and shells. Like the mosaic at the entrance to the college by Walter Eglin , this work can be described as a masterpiece.

A period of self-discovery and travel followed. In 1935 Coghuf moved to the Freiberg Mountains . In 1939 he married Hedwig Rudin. The marriage had ten children and from 1946 to 1976 he lived with his family in Muriaux .

From 1957 he designed several glass windows, u. a. In 1961 he painted the altar canopy La Sainte Trinité in St. Mary's Church as well as some tapestries and enamel works. Like some important French painters of his generation, such as Jean Bazaine or Roger Bissière , he switched to largely abstract, color-intensive compositions in which he could give form and shape to his personal, natural religiosity.
